Hot Pink, Aqua Blue, & Light Green (Oh, My!) –My Daughter’s Room Reveal

I’ve done three previous posts on my nine-year-old daughter’s bedroom, as we updated her decor to reflect her ever-changing style (I’ll link them below).  Today–finally–is the room reveal.  We didn’t change that much, but it took weeks to get her room clean enough to photograph!  I know lots of you can relate!

This was a small update.  When we moved into our new house last summer, I painted the walls Ionic Sky by Behr at my daughter’s request, and accented the aqua blue with white and pale celery green.  While soothing, it lacked the punch that her vibrant personality requires, so we decided to add pops of watermelon pink to kick the color combination up a notch.  Here’s what we wound up with:

First, I spray painted the old iron headboard (it was mine as a kid) with watermelon pink Krylon spray paint.  You can read about that HERE.  The bedding is from Target, Stein Mart, and the Paris pillow is from Hobby Lobby.  My daughter is learning French and has big plans to move to the French Rivera when she grows up (she’s going to work there as a marine biologist).  I don’t think my life was as well-thought-out when I was nine!

I recovered her thrift shop chair with Amy Butler’s Love Bliss fabric, and spray painted a breakfast in bed tray pink (read about that HERE).  Her armoire door panels got covered with the Amy Butler fabric, too (LOVE that print!).

The tied fabric lampshade is from the Nashville flea market; I bought it although I think it would be a super-easy project to do with an old wire lampshade (you could even use ribbon instead of fabric).  I bought the nightstand at the flea market on the same day–it was black but it wound up with a coat of blue paint!  I blogged about those two flea market finds HERE.

We added a hot pink throw to her papasan chair (the papasan is from PB Teen); it’s a great corner to snuggle up and read in.  I scored the throw a few years ago at a yard sale.  The pink polka dot window treatments were at Ikea when I stopped a few weeks ago in Charlotte–they were on clearance for $9.99 for the pair.  Score!

I hung this cute lamp from Ikea over her papasan chair so she has plenty of light to read by.  I sewed the cord cover from a green and white polka dot sheet I bought at the thrift store for $1.  I love buying sheets there–it’s a great way to get yards of fabric for a steal!

Her desk has seen a few different paint treatments in the three years since I found it at an antique fair.  Currently, it’s white with watermelon pink hardware and it serves as a desk/dressing table.  My daughter is contemplating taking the bulletin board down and putting a mirror in its place to facilitate its function as a grooming station, but where would we put photos and paper ephemera then?!

To incorporate a little bit of the Paris theme into her room, I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut three pieces of vinyl art.  I mounted them on hot pink card stock and put them in three 8×10 frames that I pulled out of the attic.  They were natural wood so I spray painted them black.  The Eiffel tower was meant to be a black one, although they were all sold out of those at Hobby Lobby when we went to buy it, so hot pink it is.  It clashes a bit with the other pink, but DD doesn’t care, so I’ve decided I don’t, either!

The carnival-striped table that I blogged about HERE is the first thing you see as you walk into her room, and I think it’s a great piece that ties all of the colors together.

It’s fun, it’s cheerful, and it’s full of personality, just like my Bitty Bear!

My Girl’s Room

I took some pictures in my daughter’s room this weekend and thought I would share them. She is three years old so I still, luckily, have complete control of the decor.

I am enjoying it while I can.

Her room is my favorite in the house (though My Kitchen is a close second). While I haven’t done much decorating in here, I love the simple white and pink color scheme. Having had years of only sons,  I am not going to apologize for making the most of finally getting to decorate with pink!

Her room has the best view of the lake in front of our home, and anything too fancy or fussy in here I think would compromise it. I am sure she doesn’t know yet how lucky she is to wake up and have the water right outside, but hopefully she will enjoy it when she is older.

Here bed was a $30 consignment store find I painted white, and her bedding came from EBAY (the bedspread) or from sweet friends (the pillows).

Isn’t this ice cream shoppe table perfection?

Its on loan to us from Christy’s daughter who has outgrown it, and it will be returned to Christy when we are done for her future generations. For now, its the perfect “Tea Party” table.

Her dresser is covered with part of her window treatment from her former room with some other special gifts decorating the top.

This mirror is also among my favorite things, her grandmother gave it to her. Its the sweetest little mirror ever, the roses are actually ceramic (not plastic), its adorable.

This elephant picture (below) has been in each of our baby rooms. It was the first thing my husband and I bought for my oldest son’s nursery and the frame has been painted many, many times to match nursery decor. I know the time will come soon when I have to part with it, but not just yet.

Next to her bed hangs this little plate, after I bought it I decided it was too cute to use to eat off and hung it up.

These little china figurines were mine when I was young, though for now for their protection, they are kept well out of her reach.

Her chandelier came from Picadilly Ltd in Warrenton, VA. {A wonderful little store}, and its the same one in this gorgeous nursery we featured last fall.

I have aspirations to replace her closet doors with curtains, and re-do her dresser but for now I love how simple her room is, especially when its clean…

A Nursery for a Princess…

Beautiful moldings, Restoration Kids bedding and mirrored furniture create a magical space for a little girl.

We have been excited to share this gorgeous nursery for a long time. This beautiful room was designed for a very special little Princess. Her parents worked hard to transform this bedroom with custom moldings, beautiful furniture and luxurious seating all for their special newborn baby. This room will certainly grow with this lucky little girl through the years.

Another view of this beautiful space. Notice the pale blue ceiling?

The parents covered exisiting chairs with beautiful silver silk and added a touch of sparkle with the buttons.

The mirrored cabinet provided storage (inside) as well as a beautiful place to change the baby.

A quiet corning for a night-time feeding or a story.

Clash of Styles–My Daughter’s New Desk

Phew-I need sunglasses to look at this!

My friend Megan and I went to the awesome Cameron Antique Fair in Cameron, NC, a few months ago , and I scored a beautiful little desk for $75.  I’ve been looking for one for awhile, but nothing was exactly right so I continued to bide my time.  I had visions of painting it white, or even pale green, and putting it in her very girly pink and green room, where everything matches perfectly because I worked hard to make it match perfectly.   It didn’t quite work out that way, and I have to admit that I’m still grinding my teeth over it.

My sweet little seven-year-old has developed an amazing sense of personal style over the last few months, and I’m struggling with the fact that her personal style is pretty much the opposite of mine.  Did I make her this way by imposing my taste on her during her formative years?  I happen to think that I have awesome taste, but maybe everyone thinks that, even the people who have hideous taste!  She informed me a few months ago that upon our next move, she wants her room to be green, yellow, and robin’s egg blue, with stripes, polka dots, and ELEPHANTS on the wall.  Thank God that she changed her mind last week and now wants chocolate brown walls with all white furniture and bedding (I see lots of spray paint and bleach in my future!).  My husband tells me that unless I let her express her individuality now, she will come home with pink hair when she’s a teenager, and if things continue the way they’ve been going, he will probably be correct.

My first strategic mistake on the desk was that I allowed her to pick out paint colors with me.  Everyone knows that seven-year-olds should be allowed to select from two or three PRE-APPROVED choices (this works with everything from outfits to hairstyles to paint colors), but I forgot to heed that time-honored advice and took her to the store.  You must know that I am essentially lazy and into immediate gratification when it comes to fixing up furniture, and so I usually spray paint it (I know, this shows a lack of character on my part, but I am working on it).  My favorite color of spray paint green is “Celery” by Krylon, and I have used many cans of it in Annabelle’s room.

This is celery spray paint. Isn't it beautiful?

I painted this darling stepstool with celery spray paint...

..and this cool wood initial is also celery.

But did my sweet girl want her new desk to be Celery?  No, she did not.  She wanted Pistachio, Celery’s slightly tacky older sister, and there was no arguing with her.  I suggested the old standby White, or the ever-popular Ballet Slipper, or please, please, please how about Celery?  We left the store with four cans of Pistachio, and a can of Watermelon for an accent color (yes, Watermelon is essentially hot pink).  I had a bad feeling about the whole thing, right from the beginning.

Pistachio and Watermelon. Uh-oh!

I do think that I was a good mother that afternoon because I allowed her to shoot some of the spray paint on her very own desk, and I also let her use most of the can of Watermelon to spray paint a limb that had fallen from our oak tree.  That was a good strategic move, too,  since we didn’t have as much left to paint the trim and the hardware and so the desk remains more green than pink.  I even painted Watermelon polka dots on the top of the desk at her request (but no stripes or elephants).  FYI, a wasabi can makes perfectly-sized polka dots should you ever cave in to your daughter’s decorating vision.

So here’s the final version of Annabelle’s new desk.  She adores it even though it is so bright that it clashes violently with everything else in her room.  I placed it on the same wall as the door to her room, so it’s not a focal point (you get the best light here for reading, honey).  As you can see, the desk itself is darling with lots of sweet details, and I comfort myself with the fact that in about a year, it will get a white coat of paint in her new room, and Pistachio will be a distant, although bilious memory.

Phew-I need sunglasses to look at this!
