Thank you everyone for the kind words about my daughter’s fun new room.  It was a great project and she seems to love her new space. As promised, I am back to share the details about the projects in her room.

When we started the room, I just wanted to update her room from “Little Girl” to “Girl”. After all, she is in Kindergarten now  {be still my heart!} so I wanted to reflect her– let’s just say “colorful” personality–she is kindly called “spunky” so that will give you some idea of what her personal space should represent. At first, she didn’t love the gold polkadots (she was hoping for pink flowered wallpaper) but she is all on board now–I think it was the tissue pom-pons that won her over!

The poms were super easy, and you can make them yourself with some packaged tissue paper and thin wire but I saw a Martha Stewart kit at Michael’s on clearance, and since it just happened to be white and gold, I just used that. She and I spent a rainy afternoon putting the poms together, I think she loves them even more since she helped. She also had very important opinions about where they should be hung, which we went with because –after all–it is her room.

The biggest change to the room is that I painted her furniture. If a five-year-old girl can’t have pink bedroom furniture I don’t know who can! So, I decided to pick a fun color and just go for it. Her bed was $30 at a consignment store and had been painted white, so I didn’t have anything to lose. As we’re rapidly approaching the sleepover age, I am on the hunt for a new set of twin beds for her too, so this bed may not be around forever.  Anyway, I didn’t give it much thought, took out my HomeRight Finish Max Pro and gave her current furniture a new life painted pink.  Here’s a link to the Pro if you want to learn more:

Here is a before image of the bed, the white was pretty and sweet but pink is just fun!

Even though Christy is way more proficient of a paint ‘sprayer’ than I {we learned together when she did her bed HERE–that was really FUN!}, I quickly overcame any fear using the FinishMax to spray the paint on the bed. This project took about 20 minutes–seriously, it is so easy to use and a breeze to clean up. It’s way more fun to spray then paint with a brush too, I tell you!  I was thrilled with the results of her bed and nightstand, they add a burst of color to her white-walled room, the fun gold polkadots not withstanding.

Here is a close-up of her nightstand, this came from an auction and after spraying it pink, I just sprayed the hardware on the nightstand gold with my favorite Rust Oleum metallic gold spray paint.  Then I added some shelf paper {left over from my pantry and baking pantry projects} to the sides of the drawers. I love this trick for adding a little surprise to a piece of furniture.

These little hobnail lights came from the same auction house as the nightstand, Terry scooped them up for me when they were “going-going-gone” at $2 (!) for both, I didn’t know I needed them but now couldn’t be happier to have them now. I still need to rewire one of the cords, they are ‘vintage’ for sure, but they are so adorable. I replaced the rather worn shades with new but inexpensive white shades and used a gold monogram to make them extra-special.

I think they came out darling, well worth the less than $10 per lamp.

You can see the gold and white frame behind the lamp–on a whim, I grabbed this frame I have had forever from Hobby Lobby and decided it would be easy to update it. All it took was a little white spray paint then used a gold oil-based paint pen {from another project, details soon} to outline the grooves along the edges.

One thing I really love about her room is the vintage feel–even though many of her pieces weren’t passed down from her great-grandmother, they feel like they could have been.  Since my grandmother painted her furniture crazy colors too, I think she’d approve of this! {I will show you her bright green table we still use in our kitchen in the next few weeks}.

The last project, along the same lines as the frame,  is her trash can. Exciting stuff I know! But, it just took a few minutes to spray her little trashcan with some white spray paint, and add some gold spray paint to the ball feet and yes, add another matching gold vinyl monogram. I just used the gold sharpie around the top of the can for an accent.  After all, a girl needs a place to throw trash, it might as well be cute?!!

Here are some of the small details about the other projects in the room. As I mentioned the back of the bookcase is just lined with some gold and pink wrapping paper from Homegoods, strangely enough, this was my daughter’s favorite part of the room!?! That gold and pink box is from Target last year and is started as the inspiration for our whole new color scheme. The fabric pennant hanging over her bed is the same one I made for her Lalaloopsy Birthday Party, I just shortened it and added in some of the fabric for her bed pillow and Art Board to match.

Her room is fun, fresh and she loves it–which makes it special to me. Thank you so much for your interest in it. Below are all the details and sources for those of you who’ve requested them.

Did you paint her walls a specific color first? We would love to know the paint color… is it a grey hue? Thanks!

HI Laura, no it’s just a basic builder cream…the pics may make it look gray? But it’s pretty plain!
      Thanks,
      Amy

They are very basic curtain rods (maybe from Home Depot?) I honestly can’t remember. I just sprayed silver ones gold with Rustoleum Spray Paint!

Amy, I love your blog! I’m in search of pink and white striped curtains – do you mind sharing where you found these? I know that this is several years old now, holding out hope! Cheers – Erin
