Girl’s Room Makeover

white room and bed marked

Last weekend I suddenly was inspired to begin transforming my daughter’s room. I started by thinking I would just quickly paint over the part above the chair rail, but once I started things just kept moving along. How does that happen? 🙂

Here {below} is how the room looked when we moved into the house. There was a little girl who lived in this room prior to my daughter, so the room was already decorated in ‘girl’ decor. As you can see below, it was green and purple. I sort of thought we’d all live with it for the time being, but my daughter is obsessed with pink and kept asking when she would get her “pink room” again. Then, one day I realized the wallpaper border was in fact a vinyl border that I could peel it right off, once you start something like that there is no turning back! Unfortunately for me, I found that the paint hadn’t been cut in to the ceiling {why would they, it was hidden after all?} so I knew at some point soon I would have to paint the whole thing.

The Room "Before".

If you have seen her room in our last house {view it HERE} this new room is pretty similar. I do plan to update it again as the pale colors don’t necessarily reflect her rather agh,  ‘spunky’ personality {update is HERE}. For that update I am engaging the services of my favorite young design consultant, Annabelle– Christy’s daughter– to help with the next round of changes. In the meantime, we stuck with what we already had, and my daughter and I are both comfortable with the familiar pink and white color scheme.

Most of her pieces are collected, vintage and repurposed. The mirror hanging over her bed has the sweetest pale pink china roses on it and was a gift from her Grandmother. It’s gorgeous and belongs over a bed, but sadly I think it needs to be moved as one unfortunate jumping on the bed incident will total it, and that would be tragic.

Across from her bed hangs her banner from her Lalaloopsy birthday party, and a small toy chest I painted and added a monogram to holds stuffed animals {is it just me or do they multiply overnight?!?}. The post on how I made the damask frame is here.

Next to her bed is her inherited {from Annabelle} Ice Cream Table set.  Christy has kindly loaned it to us for the time being, and it is very often the setting for an afternoon tea party.

The window drapes are pink and white silk and came from Pottery Barn Kids, I adore them and plan to cling to some pink décor as long as I can so we can keep using them in here.

Since moving in I have had some minor aggravation with her closet. It had great built-ins already–what I think is an IKEA Expedit that has floor-to-ceiling wire shelves attached to it. Since she has a lot of dresses and hanging clothes, the closet just didn’t have much space in that regard. Last weekend, I cleaned the whole closet out and set about finding a system that worked for us. I had considered removing the Expedit completely but then decided it made perfect sense to use it to store her toys in baskets so I simply pulled out a middle shelf and suddenly had way more space to hang her clothes.

We are a week into it, and so far the new system seems to be working well. She can reach her summer/everyday clothes, and I can hang winter and special occasion dresses out of her reach. This has already saved many a meltdown over why she can’t wear a satin flower girl dress to Vacation Bible School!

The bins hold socks and tights etc., the baskets hold toys. Hopefully as she grows she’ll be able to sort through her toys herself, for now we’ll do it together to try to keep the system working.  Still on the list is to hang curtains instead of the closet doors to give her a little more space for her tea parties, and I am looking for a rug {with Annabelle’s help!} but that will probably wait for the next generation of décor changes.

FYI: Paint colors are Ivory White above and a custom mix {in other words some pink I had mixed with white to lighten it!} below the chair rail.

PS We’ve moved to our new house since this post, and her room is different (again).  Click here to see it with gold polka dots!

Do you happen to remember the name of the pink paint color you used? I am looking for a shade just like this for my daughters room and it’s so hard to find just the right pink!

    Thanks!

Hi I am looking to sell a set of ice cream parlor table and chairs that are exactly like that. Do you know what store they were from?
