I hope everyone had a lovely Easter! We had the best time with my parents and some close friends, it was the perfect way to celebrate the day.
Now that Spring Break is over I am trying to get back to a few projects around the house. I’ve mentioned before that my favorite room to decorate is my daughter’s room, which is probably why it’s constantly being updated! I was exclusively a “boy” mom for the first seven years I was a mother, so the gift of our final child–a little girl who needs girl things–still fills me with happiness.
When we moved into our house two years ago her room was the first room I did a quick makeover on. {See it here} We’d moved several times for my husband’s job so I wanted her to feel settled quickly, you can see her room our rental home {here} and prior to that in our coastal home {here}.
The makeover above was simple; I painted her furniture pink, added gold vinyl polkadots and hung up some tissue poms but we didn’t do any major painted or updating outside of that. I like to call this “rental” decor because it was such an easy makeover!
I have always liked the idea of wallpapering the wall with the polkadots as it’s the one you see looking straight into the room. Also, as any parent knows, a lot can happen in two years. She has grown up SO much since we created this space so I wanted decor that would continue to grow with her.
When we moved into our house (Easter weekend two years ago) this was our little girl.
And fast forward to Spring Break this last week, here she is being silly at the Mall…tell me time doesn’t fly!?
Aside from updating the space as she grows, much of this makeover is happening because we recently moved another twin bed into her room. She is at the height of the sleepover stage and her poor friends were getting stuck on an air mattresses on the floor, while we always had an empty bed in my son’s room {who mostly holds sleepovers in the basement} that was going to waste. Since I still have to paint that bed and buy new matching bedding it seemed to be a good time to do a complete overhaul.
For fun last week, she and I sat down and looked at some inspiration rooms, because even though I have the final say, it’s her space and I want it to make her happy. I loved hearing her thoughts.
To help her narrow down what she wanted, I showed her some of my favorite “internet” rooms and let her pick her favorite. We looked at some wallpaper patterns and talked about her favorite colors, pink remains the champion.
This Anthropologie Wallpaper has long been at the top of my wish list for her room so I was hopeful she would love it as much as I do. We looked at this darling room from The LilyPad Cottage and my daughter quickly asked for the same pink bed but decided she didn’t care for all the dark green leaves in the paper, so off the list the list it went. Sadly.
Next we looked at this room from Addison’s Wonderland, which is my current favorite even though I know we’d be taking on a total decor overhaul. I love the soft colors, the pale whitewashed furniture and with the twin beds it was the perfect inspiration for our space.
My daughter loved this room too, but she felt like it didn’t have enough “pink” in it for her. In looking at the wallpaper more closely {below}, I think that this could successfully remain a contender, I have hopes!
While sourcing this wallpaper, I found two other patterns that we both really liked. This pale blue paper with the pink birds is really cute, though I think it’s too young for the older direction we’re trying to go but it would be sweet in a nursery. This website has a TON of great patterns, by the way.
Next I discovered this paper below and I fell in love. It would be a lot of green to overcome but with the woodland motif and I feel like this could be such a creative and fun space. If she had an adjoining bathroom {unfortunately she shares with her brothers, and this probably isn’t the best idea for them}, I’d use this paper in there in a heartbeat.
I wasn’t at all surprised when she completely lit up when she saw this next room from Dear Lillie, I think it’s one of the prettiest little girl spaces I have ever seen. It quickly became clear that this was her favorite, it had the pink that matters to her and she liked the floral pattern of the paper the best.
My only concern is that with two windows to work around on the wall that the larger pattern won’t have enough “room” to display properly, but in the end what matters is that she loves the space so my wheels are turning…We’ll have to see!
After all that, a few days later we spent a girl’s day at the Mall {hence the “fashionista” pic above} and popped into Pottery Barn Kids. She professed to fall in love with the new Monique Lhuillier line of bedding and after ALWAYS telling me she didn’t care for pink and gray, she had a sudden, drastic change of heart. She actually snapped this picture below of the store display {on my phone of course} so I apologize for the quality but the catalog and website show the room differently, not the pink and gray they had in store.
Interesting enough, the Pottery Barn room reminded me so much of the room I shared in this post here that Joanna Gaines created for her little girls, where I just happened to mention I’d be over the moon if my daughter would agree to let me do something similar…{image via HGTV}
Decisions! After that I started sourcing bedding, yikes! I’ll have to save that for another post but I found it even more overwhelming, especially since I now need two of everything for each bed.
We are still narrowing down our final choices, and we still have our bathroom in progress so this room isn’t getting done anytime soon, but it sure is fun to think about what we will do in the meantime.
Of course, I’d love to hear which one you like best in the comments 🙂
