A new baby and a new house!

**Our newest giveaway is up and running over on our Current Giveaways page.  We’re giving away two copies of 31 Days to a Heart of Hospitality, an ebook by our friend Edie over at Life{in}Grace.**

Here is a bit of what’s been going on with the other two of us while Christy’s been covering 11 Magnolia Lane over the last two weeks! She did a great job of course :) She is now in the midst of preparing to move, and winding up the school year, so I told her I would jump back in and give everyone all the news.

First of all, we are SO proud to share our newest resident at Magnolia Lane. Last week Terry and her family welcomed this sweet bundle of joy to their family. I have been lucky enough to spend time with him and can attest he will just melt your heart!

Gorgeous photo by Courtney Anderson Photography. He is in his beautiful nursery, see the whole room HERE.

And we’ve completed our move! Well, at least as far as we are able to reside in our home, but we still have boxes everywhere. We really jumped back in our new area with kids’ activities, school events, sporting events and of course, that new baby pictured above to visit  :) so unpacking has taken a backseat.

Our new home is very different from our former lakefront home near the beach. We traded the water view for space, space and more space. Just having a basement for storage the kids to play in is so nice, not to mention all this closet space :) I will be sure to show off more of the house once I get it more presentable but for now here is a bit of a sneak peak via my phone.

{the dining room}

While we waited for our belongings to arrive, I had a few days in the empty house to make some adaptions so it would match our current cooler, light color scheme. Much of this home is decorated in warmer tones like yellow, mustard, moss green and burgundy.

{the family room}

We discovered the other day that the stripes on the fireplace wall are not what they seem–wallpaper–but actually painted on the wall. I need to find out the scoop on that from the owner, it’s just amazing to me someone could paint perfect stripes on a two-story wall.

{the screened porch–I have BIG plans for this space!}

I did have a few projects right at the top of my list. First off, my oldest son is moving into the room that was a former office. I tackled removing the flowered wallpaper border, as it is not really my son’s taste. I’ll do a post on that shortly, I learned a lot of what to do and not do removing wallpaper. Here is the room previously, it was an easy fix and after the border came down, the beige walls work perfectly for a preteen boy.

declan room

I also painted the master bedroom. It was formerly dark minty green, and our bedding and accessories didn’t really match. I have been obsessed with the Sherwin Williams color ‘Blue Diamond’ since I saw it in my brother in law’s beach condo last winter. Its the perfect palest blue, with just hints of gray, and couldn’t wait to use it in my bedroom. Had I not just painted my old master bedroom, I would have redone it immediately to that color after our visit.

bedroom after

Unfortunately things didn’t go as planned with the color, it came out WAY more blue then I expected. Here is the repainted room, and while I like it, its obviously not the ‘palest’ blue out there. I am not sure if its the dark green behind {but I used paint with primer?} or perhaps I incorrectly remembered the color and got something else similar instead, or maybe the color was off from being mixed at Home Depot? {Thoughts?} Anyway, lesson learned but I will just live with it–or repaint the room again down the road!

I am off to go unpack, but thanks for stopping by!

Dining Room Makeover {BM Revere Pewter Paint}

It’s been 5 years in the making but every room on the main level of my house is finally painted- YAHOO!!!  This is such a huge victory for me as I really hate painting.  Well, that may not be entirely true as what I really hate is the prepping and taping.  I know there are million gadgets out there that tell you that you don’t need to tape if you buy their products.  Unfortunately that just doesn’t apply to me and my “get it done” personality.  I am a born ‘rusher’,  I start a project and I want it done as soon as I begin.  This is not the best personality to have when it comes to DIY home improvement projects and that is why I must tape prior to painting:)

I hate taping but it is a necessity for my “get-it-done” personality!

My dining room is prepped and ready for some color!

Another reason it has taken me so long to paint my house is because I am afraid to commit.  I have a huge fear over picking the wrong paint color.  I am so thankful for my girlfriends as they have an amazing eye for color and help point me in the right direction.   This time around, I painted outside of my beige comfort zone and tried a cooler shade of grey.  Revere Pewter is an amazing Benjamin Moore color with a tiny hit of beige so it was the perfect compromise for me.  It ties perfectly into the rest of my home and as you can see below, it works well with the Grant Beige painted in my formal living room which is right next door.

Adding some color to my dinning room inspired me to move some things around.  Remember that mirror I had hanging above my buffet?  I have since painted that with chalk paint and shifted it over to another wall.  My husband and I placed an open white shelf where the mirror used to hang.  I am sure this looks very familiar as Amy and Christy both have this exact shelf hanging in their home,  I guess I felt left out and had to have one for myself!  Doesn’t it look so much better?

Here is the mirror before the chalk board makeover- sorry for the Halloween flash back!

My new and improved chalk board!!!

New paint and open shelving really changes the look of my dinning room.

I actually stenciled this jar because I wanted to create a fall “Thankful” apothecary container this past November. I tried to write down reasons to be thankful daily and I would place them inside this jar. I have kept it out because I love the burnt red color of the leaves and I feel that I still have a ton to be thankful for this Christmas. It is a terrific reminder to remain thankful during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.

Lastly, here are a few shots of my holiday dinning room tablescape:

Bunched up burlap fabric creates a rustic table runner

My dollar store snowflake plates add a pop of red to my dinning room table

I love adding greenery to a table

This belonged to my beloved grandmother (aka: Nanie). She passed away last year at 103 years old. I love having bits and pieces of her memory scattered around my home especially at Christmas. This is one of my favorite holiday memories as Nanie would light the candles and it would magically spin around.

Happy Holidays!

Holiday Hot Cocoa Station

A couple of weekends ago I spent a few hours selling hot cocoa at the local Illumination Parade to benefit my children’s school.

Another volunteer and I working the cocoa stand to benefit our elementary school.

We are always trying to raise a little extra money to support our children, the amazing teachers and staff who work there.  It was truly and incredible experience as so many people came out to support our town and march in the parade.  Thousands of people lined the streets of old town Warrenton as local businesses, schools, clubs, bands and veterans walked or “floated” by.  I am not sure anyone expected such a huge turn especially in our small town but it created an unforgettable night filled with community spirit.

We sold three different flavors of hot chocolate that night and it inspired me to set up my very own “Hot Cocoa Station” in my house.  It allows my holiday visitors to help themselves and indulge in a cup of cocoa.  It’s an adorable holiday touch sitting on my dining room buffet.  My kids love it too!

Check out those vintage mason jars,  they were my grandmother’s and she filled these jars each and every summer with the bounty from her garden.  She was such an inspiration to me and now I get to think of her every time I walk into my dining room.  Cocoa anyone?

These vintage mason jars came from my Grandmother who canned everything leftover from her garden.

Here are some of the hot cocoa toppings we sold at our cocoa stand the other night at the parade.  The peppermint cocoa was the most popular as the candy cane melts in the hot cocoa and really gives it a minty taste- YUM!

Peppermint Cocoa:

  • Regular hot cocoa
  • Whipped Cream Topping
  • Red Sprinkles
  • Candy Cane

Teddy Bear Cocoa

  • Regular Hot Cocoa
  • Whipped Cream Topping
  • Teddy Gram Teddy Bear Gram Crackers
  • Cinnamon and Sugar Sprinkles

Dark Chocolate Cocoa

  • Regular Hot Cocoa
  • Whipped Topping
  • Chocolate Sauce drizzle
  • Chocolate Jimmies
  • A Square of Dark Chocolate on Top
Enjoy!

Progress in My Dining Room–Open Shelving and Chevrons!

Sneak peek of the “after”

**There’s still time to enter our giveaway for a hand-stamped silver necklace from Pure Gratitude.  Click {here} to read about it!**

I’ve been working on my dining room over the past few weeks.  It’s the first room you see when you enter our home, and it’s always been my least favorite.  I had two goals:  to make it more welcoming and casual.  Right now, we only use our dining room two or three times a year, and I’m convinced it’s because it’s such a formal room–and we’re not really formal people!

When we moved in, the walls were a deep chocolate brown and the trey ceiling was faux finished with a brown and gold treatment.  The window treatments were lovely, but made the room really dark, and the paint color sucked all the light out of the room.  I also wasn’t a fan of the chandelier.  Here’s a “before” picture I dug out from my house hunting pictures.

Last summer, I scored a Ballard Grande Claire chandelier on Craigslist for $100, and sold the old one on Craigslist for $100.  That worked out well, huh?  My sweet husband painted the walls while the kids and I were away (“Camouflage” by Benjamin Moore) and we lived with it like this for about a year, but it wasn’t exactly right:

The week of Halloween, I reached the point where I couldn’t take it anymore.  I sold the drapes on Craigslist (and they went FAST) and rolled up the antique hooked wool rug that our sweet rescue dog ripped last month.  He didn’t mean to, but he was chasing the cat and skidded out.  I think the room looks better without it, anyway.

I painted the walls “Fawn Brindle” by Sherwin Williams, but mixed at only half strength so it would be lighter.  We have that color in our living room/great room so I wanted there to be a slight contrast with the rest of the downstairs.  The painting went quickly because the bottom half of the walls is wainscoting and two walls are open to the living room.

Next, I decided to install open shelving over the buffet.  I used Amy’s idea from her kitchen, and built my shelves from stair treads and corbels (both from Home Depot).  At my store, they were in the same row.  Here are the corbels I used:

I spray painted the corbels and the stair treads and hung them.  In hindsight, I’d put them a little lower to make them more functional for storing dishes and serving pieces, but then I wouldn’t have had room to put the silver platter on the wall, and I really like it there.  Read about how to hang silver platters easily {here}.

The next thing I did was to add a little chevron shelf paper to the doors of the buffet.  I bought a couple of rolls when Amy found them at TJ Maxx and used them to redo her pantry and her butler’s pantry.  LOVE the chevrons, and I should be able to just peel the paper off if/when I change my mind.

I pulled these two prints off the wall (I bought them at a thrift store in Virginia when we lived there) and decided to turn the gorgeous frames into chalkboards.  Here’s the before:

And the after:

I hung the two frames on either side of the shelving–I’m a big fan of symmetry!  Oh, and chalkboard art is TOUGH–but I’m going to keep practicing. :)

I moved the guitars upstairs and had a free corner to the right of the buffet.  I decided to bring in a little antique metal stool that hasn’t really had a home in this house.  It was painted celery green but I gave it a coat of metallic silver to make it look a bit more industrial.  Here’s how it turned out:

Now we’re ready to have small visitors come to dinner!

Hobby Lobby is selling gray chevron fabric right now, so I bought enough to cover the piano bench:

Now, it’s not done yet.  The windows are bare, although my plan is to buy plain white panels from Ikea or Target and paint stripes on them.

Here’s where we are so far:

Vintage decanters on the buffet serve as my bar area:

My mom and dad’s wedding announcement always gets pride of place:

If you’re really observant you can tell that I continued to tweak the styling and things aren’t in the same place in all of the pictures.  Here’s a wide shot:

See Harley in the corner?  He’s really sorry about the rug!

I left the ceiling brown; I had debated painting it a deeper gray, but with the antique bronze/gold of the chandelier and the brown wood of the furniture, it worked to keep it the way it was.

Here’s the BIG question, though, and I need everyone’s advice.  I am seriously considering painting the table, chairs, and buffet.  The table was seriously damaged in our last move (thanks so much, Atlas Van Lines!) and I’m going to have to take it apart anyway to try to repair the pedestals.  The tabletop is damaged, too.  So, I’d love your feedback on whether or not to paint; if so, what color (white?  gray?), and also your opinions on different methods.  I’ve never used chalk paint and hear it’s the bomb.  Thanks in advance for your input, and thanks for stopping by!

Fall Decor

It took me awhile this year {or did everyone just start decorating earlier?} to get into the swing of fall…maybe because its in the 80′s here on the coast of Virginia and has been so humid it feels like we live, as we kindly say, in the “tropics”, Ugh!

Last year at this time we had just moved into our new home, and I could not wait to decorate my porch for Fall as you can see below. {That post is HERE}.

This year, I decorated inside first where at least my air conditioning makes it feel more “fall-like”. Starting in my Dining Room, I wound up pulling some blue accents in along with the traditional fall decor. Since I painted the ceiling blue in this room, I can’t ignore the tone completely, but I think it mixed in nicely.

If you follow closely, yes I had that simple wood box in my gift wrapping armoire–in case you recognize it–I just found something new to use instead for that space and I love how rustic it is on the more formal table in here.

I updated the tiny little dining room bar area with some fall touches as well.

Right outside the room is this little area in our front hallway. This little table just seemed complete with this wedding picture from many years ago {Wow, time flies!} of course, mostly because I thought the frame blended nicely. This may even be our last wedding picture floating around? They get taken over by all the pictures of the kids after awhile, don’t they?

Here is what I put together in our Family Room. I didn’t expect to do anything with my mantel this year. However, I found Layla’s mantel HERE to be inspirational and immediately wanted to use a similar concept in my house.

Christy made me some number vinyls last year, and the “3″ I have on the plate is just something that signifies our three kiddos. I found both this little ironstone pitcher and this milk crate in Maine this summer at some of my favorite antique stores. The crate is a lovely reminder all winter of our Maine vacation spot which is just down the road from Waterville.

I haven’t even dragged out my Halloween decor, but I suppose that is up next! Hopefully we’ll get some cooler temperatures next week to help us get in the spirit of things.

So let me ask, am I behind or did everyone just get on the ball earlier this year? :)

Thanks for stopping by!

Changing Up My Dining Room Chargers

Gold chargers ready for their makeover!!

Do you have a space in your home that you are avoiding due to a decorating dilemma?  Maybe you’re even feeling overwhelmed with the idea of trying to change it up?  I feel that way with my dining room.   When we moved here 5 years ago I had so much red decor.  Red drapes, red sofas, cherry floors, red pots …. red everything!!  As time has passed and we had a major flood that caused us to need a lot of repairs, I am moving on from my love of red in a very different direction.

My red and gold dining room in need of a mini makeover!

After flooding my entire main level and changing out our cherry hardwood floors to an ebony beech, I have been trying to change up my decor one room at a time.  I am drawn to the simplicity of classic black and white but have had a difficult time moving past all my existing decor. How do I change up my style without spending a fortune?

Some much needed inspiration as I change up my decorating style!! TheEntertainingHouse.com

I have been trying to come up with creative and inexpensive ways to change up my current style without getting overwhelmed.  One tip I can offer is to take it one small project or one room at a time.   Amy helped me jump-start this process in my dining room as she generously handed down some beautiful black and white houndstooth drapes she no longer needed.  They were actually hung in the model home for my neighborhood at one point so they were the perfect fit and a much better color selection than what I had originally chosen.   They were also FREE (thank you Amy!)

Gold chargers made the dining room look and feel a bit too formal but check out those houndstooth drapes!!

Another problem I have in my dining room is that I have gold accent overload.  I love gold and I think you can add bits and pieces of gold to every room but too much of anything is never a good thing.  I had gold chargers, gold mirrors, gold flatware (which I still love) and gold platters.  I needed to update the gold to something a bit more casual and hopefully brighten up the space at the same time.

Loving the black and white!

With new black and white drapes hanging, I decided to change up my gold chargers.  I already had the white spray paint so that was an easy and very inexpensive way to solve my red and gold decorating dilemma.

Vinyl # decals courtesy of Christy!!

Christy graciously offered to cut out some vinyl numbers for me with her awesome Silhouette cutter.  How lucky I am to have two very generous and creative women in my life!  Not only are they providing two key elements for my dining room up-date, they inspire me daily with all their decorating know-how.  I am excited to see my dining room transform, even if it is one piece at a time, and I am looking forward to entertaining in my new casual, yet classic, black and white dining room.

My dining room mini makeover is looking better and brighter in black & white

Happy Decorating!

Rethinking Traditional Spaces

One trend that I have been following closely is the use of spaces in homes for a different purpose then they were traditionally intended. Sometimes it comes out of necessity, such as the arrival of another child, a work from home job that creates the need for an office space, or the must-have playroom when the flood of bright, large plastic toys appears in your home by the time your first child is roughly six months old.

So, by my calculations I need about a 6000 square foot home because I can make the argument that I “need” all the following spaces in my house.

  • A bedroom for me and my husband and a separate bedroom for each of our three children
  • A guest room with a private bath
  • A home office for him
  • A home office for me
  • A craft/art room (for my children, and me)
  • A playroom for my daughter
  • A big kids playroom for my boys who “need” space to play video games (or occasionally read a book)
  • A garage/ workroom for those dirty, sawdust and paint-strewn DIY projects
  • A library reading area with shelves for the books we have amassed
  • A mudroom for coats, bags, backpacks
  • A large laundry/ironing/gift wrapping room (and it should be upstairs where laundry is, please)
  • A quiet room for homework with a computer
  • A TV room (one not intruded on by the above mentioned video games) where my husband can watch in peace
  • A large eat-in kitchen of course with a separate a butler’s pantry– while we are in fantasy land!

Enough? Reality Check!!!

I don’t have that many rooms, hardly even close! My house is NO WHERE NEAR 6000 square feet and in fact, we recently moved to a smaller home then our previous home and no longer even have a basement, which is hard, especially when you have 3 kids.

I find myself paying closer attention now when I see rooms being used for other purposes then tradition or the homebuilder intended them to be.

For instance, we hardly use our Dining Room (in this house its too small to host more then a few people in anyway). When we entertain, everyone is always in the Kitchen anyway. We moved a smaller table in the room recently, but I often think the space would make a nice reading room like the very smart Sarah from Thrifty Decor Chick is doing HERE. I can’t wait to see her outcome.

Traditional Dining Room turned Library at Thrifty Decor Chick

We use the traditional living room in our floorplan as a home office, and recently added an IKEA chair and a TV (yes, with the Wii). One of my children is always in the chair, more often times reading.  With space for only one chair, they get the space all to themselves but can keep me company if I am in the office working.  My daughter has an “art” area in this room as well, which also gives her a chance to do her projects close to me, and away from her brothers.

A quiet reading area in my home office

How wonderful and smart is this Dining Room turned Craft Room by Jen at Tatertots and Jello? I admire her in creating a room that she uses all the time and foregoing the traditional and often unused dining room in favor of a great creative space.

Dining Room turned Craft Room at Tatertots and Jello

We don’t have a mudroom, or anything close to it. But we do have a large coat closet, and I think I could, given the time and energy, make it function as a mini-mudroom like Shelley at House of Smiths has done. Such a cute space, and so much better then piles of backpacks and jackets that naturally amass by the door, right?

Entry Way Closet Turned Mini-Mudroom from House of Smiths

Christy didn’t have a separate room in her historic North Carolina home for a play area, but she did have a large upstairs hallway area. She turned it into the cutest playroom area for her children, and the couch got great use as an overflow sleepover space for visiting young friends.

Christy's upstairs hall turned playroom

I will forever be jealous of this amazing Kid’s Homework Area that Terry created out of an unused part of her basement. She can work nearby, and her kids have a quiet space of their own.

Terry's Basement Kids Learning Center

I don’t have the picture of her home to share of this specifically, but a woman in my bible study recently shared she replaced her kitchen table (they had a separate dining area) with a couch. She said it was one of the best things she had done, and it really encouraged her children to sit and chat with her while she cooked or cleaned up. I love that idea!

Have you seen any great rooms reused for other purposes? Are you using your rooms for a different purpose then it was originally intended? I would love to see them!

Tracey’s Home Tour {part two}

We are back, as promised, with more of our friend Tracey’s pretty home. If you missed part one, click HERE to see her recent kitchen renovation.

She has such great style we took some pictures in some of her other rooms while we were there photographing the kitchen. We thought we needed to share a few more of her inspiring rooms.

This is her Living Room. She actually recovered her former gray couch with a white Ikea slipcover, and no, her original couch wasn’t from Ikea…with just some minor modification to the hidden parts of the slipcover, she made it work perfectly with her existing furniture.

She has decorated much of her room from finds at Target (like the chair) or Homegoods (the barrel sidetable shown above).

Love the pop of pink from the flowers mixing with the metallic green pillow, and here is a peak at their cute canine, Dash.

She recently (after we were there)  got this great ottoman from where else? Target! She emailed us a picture so we could see the update, and here it is.

Here is the view into her Dining Room from the attached Living Room…

This was your standard, brass, builder light fixture. She sprayed it black, added shades and a sparkly cord cover. Huge difference!

She has a talent for mixing the same color scheme throughout her rooms, there are pops of the green from the kitchen color scheme in her gray, white and black dining room. She has great styling and pretty vignettes throughout her entire home.

Moving across the home to their home office, I LOVE this gray and orange space. I have to say, reading back I thought to myself I would never expected to say that I am a fan of that color scheme, but it really works. She worked with a passed-down loveseat and integrated the orange/peach tones with dark gray walls, classic white shelving and colorful artwork.

I wonder if she has anymore rooms for us to show!? Maybe she will have us back again :)

Thanks Tracey for allowing us into your home and to share it here at Magnolia Lane.

Things are “Looking Up” in my Dining Room

In our recent HOME TOUR post, I showed this picture of my dining room.

I just felt like the room needed some jazzing up so this weekend, despite the gorgeous sunny weekend weather we finally have here, so I decided I needed to paint the ceiling blue.

I think it adds a lot, don’t you?

We wanted to pull the blue from the lake outside but still keep the room clean and simple so as not to distract too much from the view.

And, I wanted to give this chandelier a little more impact.

While we are in the Dining Room, I will say that this china cabinet is probably my favorite piece of furniture. I have taken a paint brush and white paint to most of my dark wood furniture, but this I will never change. My Dad found it many years ago in a barn on his grandparents’ property and scraped dark green paint off it and made it gorgeous. I coveted it for years; my parents passed it down to my husband and me when we got married. I am even attached to the circa 1970′s brass hardware (yes, even the one that has been  missing since our move!).

As I have mentioned, we don’t use this room much for a traditional dining room, it’s really too small to hold more then a few people. But it’s the perfect spot for coffee.

And, it has one of the best views in the house.

The warm weather has brought out all sorts of visitors to our community,  just moments ago I glanced outside and saw a guy riding his bike on the bike path using a kite to propel him, while passing by in the water was a dad in a kayak pulling 2 little girls in a raft behind him.  Its never dull around here on a beautiful day…and so on that note, now I am going to head outside too!

Hope it’s a beautiful Sunday for you as well.

Sometimes it works…and then sometimes…

As I have mentioned I am working hard to get my home ready to go on the real estate market.  So, recently I have been updating certain problem areas to help my home “show” in the best possible light. As I don’t live close to many retail establishments, this has involved spending LOTS of money with Ballard Designs.

I love Ballard, they are just my taste. I am always happy to see the catalog arrive in my mailbox, and love pouring over each issue. But, as you would expect with mail order, sometimes things work…and sometimes they don’t.

My success today came in the form of the Ballard Couture Chair Covers I ordered for my dining room chairs. This was admittedly, a risk, as I totally don’t have the Ballard chairs they are designed to go on. I did measure my chairs vs. the dimensions in the catalog (as well as sadly, passing on having them monogrammed so I could return them if they didn’t work out) and I knew they would be off but not by too much.

Here is the “before” of my chairs. They came from Storehouse many years ago, and while I love the lines of my table, I have never loved the chairs. The set was the first furniture my husband and I purchased after we were married for our little townhouse. So, it was time for a little updating. Plus, I recently painted the walls chocolate, with the intention of making almost everything else in the room white.

Here is the chair before: (I had recovered the seats a few years ago)

I figured (correctly) that my chairs would need some help to match the dimensions of the slipcovers, but I just added some layers of quilt batting over the back (top) of the chair, and slid the cover on. While its not  a perfect fit, its fills out the slipcover and is a huge improvement.

I know that I could have made something similar, but at $35 each, plus I used the 15% off coupon Ballard just ran, it was well worth my time to just order them and not pay for materials, childcare and deal with my lack of patience with sewing. I love them! I did not love the amount of ironing they took when they came out of the package–but hopefully the remaining wrinkles will fall out over the next few weeks.

Now, my “fail” of the day…I have been waiting for WEEKS for the Ballard Burlap panels to come back in stock. They arrived yesterday, and after even more ironing, I got them up. Then took them down, rehung the curtain rods higher, and put them back up. Their weight promptly pulled the rods out of the wall, so then I re-anchored them and rehung them again. And decided it was all a waste of time…

Here they are (see the rods still falling out of the wall?)

In my opinion they just don’t work. While I hoped they would cover up a less then pretty view out the back window, I don’t like how dark they are, and how wide they are in the space. The final straw  is the cost of new (more substantial) rods– on top of the curtain cost– just wouldn’t be worth it just to make the room look good to show. So, back to the drawing board!!! I am thinking a trip to Ikea??? I need a cheap, easy short-term solution, and as always its a good place to start.
