Loving the black and white!

Gold chargers ready for their makeover!!

Do you have a space in your home that you are avoiding due to a decorating dilemma?  Maybe you’re even feeling overwhelmed with the idea of trying to change it up?  I feel that way with my dining room.   When we moved here 5 years ago, I had so much red decor.  Red drapes, red sofas, cherry floors, red pots …. red everything!!  As time has passed (and we had a major flood that caused us to need a lot of repairs), I am moving on from my love of red into a very different direction.

My red and gold dining room in need of a mini makeover!

After flooding my entire main level and changing out our cherry hardwood floors to an ebony beech, I have been trying to change up my decor one room at a time.  I am drawn to the simplicity of classic black and white, but have had a difficult time moving past all my existing decor. How do I change up my style without spending a fortune?

Some much needed inspiration as I change up my decorating style!!  TheEntertainingHouse.com

I have been trying to come up with creative and inexpensive ways to change up my current style without getting overwhelmed.  One tip I can offer is to take it one small project or one room at a time.   Amy helped me jump-start this process in my dining room as she generously handed down some beautiful black and white houndstooth drapes she no longer needed.  They were actually hung in the model home for my neighborhood at one point, so they were the perfect fit and a much better color selection than what I had originally chosen.   They were also FREE (thank you Amy!).

Gold chargers made the dining room look and feel a bit too formal but check out those houndstooth drapes!!

Another problem I have in my dining room is that I have gold accent overload.  I love gold, and I think you can add bits and pieces of gold to every room, but too much of anything is never good.  I had gold chargers, gold mirrors, gold flatware (which I still love) and gold platters.  I needed to update the gold to something a bit more casual and hopefully brighten up the space at the same time.

White chargers with black vinyl numbers

Loving the black and white!

With new black and white drapes hanging, I decided to change up my gold chargers.  I already had the white spray paint so that was an easy and very inexpensive way to solve my red and gold decorating dilemma.

Christy graciously offered to cut out some vinyl numbers for me with her awesome Silhouette cutter.  How lucky I am to have two very generous and creative women in my life!  Not only are they providing two key elements for my dining room update, they inspire me daily with all their decorating know-how.  I am excited to see my dining room transform, even if it is one piece at a time, and I am looking forward to entertaining in my new casual, yet classic, black and white dining room.

My dining room mini makeover is looking better and brighter in black & white

Love the changes. The chargers are fabulous and of course I adore the polka dot runner. Great idea.

    Hi Marty-
Thanks for stopping by and for your comments. I was a bit nervous the runner was too whimsy so I am thrilled to see that you liked it and felt it worked in my mini makeover:)
Thanks again for your kind words and support!

    Hi Terry,

I love these! I know what you mean about changing things up after you’ve decorated a room. But they runner and chargers are adorable and I bet you will use them a lot.

Glad to find your blog 🙂

LOVE the chargers in white. I think the room looks so much lighter now. The curtains are gorgeous and I think the polka dot runner adds the right touch of whimsy (and it’s easy enough to change up when you’re feeling more serious)! Sarah

The numbers on the chargers are absolutely adorable. They add just the perfect touch to make them seem more personal. I like this “mini makeover!” Great job!

If you dont mind me asking, where did you get your dinning room table and chairs? The name or brand might be helpful. I have something in my mind as to what I want and can’t seem to find it. But I just think I did!

    Thanks
