I was sharing some projects on Instagram this week and it gave me an idea to pull some of the quick home updates into a blog post. Some of them you may have seen, but maybe this will give you some new ideas on easy, affordable, simple updates you can make in your home the next time you have a few hours to spare.
It seems now, that especially on social media, rooms are overhauled in record time, and projects that used to take teams of contractors get knocked out by a single influencer. If this is intimidating to you, here’s a look at just a few things you can do if you have a few hours this weekend. Making your home feel like you is always worth the investment in your time and energy, and doesn’t always have to be expensive or complicated.
The first idea is to cover a ho-hum floor with peel and stick floor tiles, it’s simple, easy and affordable. Christy did it in this powder room makeover (the how-to is here), and I also used them in my laundry room in our last home. You can simply cut the tiles with sharp scissors, and they adhere easily. You can find the tile I used here, and the black and white she used here.
If the idea of wallpapering a room is intimidating, you can just add a pre-cut mural to be an accent wall, like I did in our last mudroom. I ordered the mural here, it came pre-pasted and pre-cut exactly to the size I needed. All I did was wet the paper, and apply to the wall. It was an easy project!
Your kitchen layout may not necessarily need this project, but did you know can give any appliance to get the look of stainless steel? For months the looming black side of our refrigerator caught my eye, finally I tried the liquid stainless steel kit to transform the black into a stainless look. It held up great, and was easy to do. The full post is here.
If you like the look of cafe string lights outdoors, but don’t want to (or can’t) anchor them into the ground, you can see how we used planters to hang lights on our raised deck in this post. We simply hung the cafe lights between the 4×4’s set in concrete in the planters. Another option, one that is simpler and will work if you are on the ground, is to use stakes or these that attach directly to your deck supports. You can see the how-to post here.
We’ve hacked many IKEA items and made them functional (including a wall of bookcases) but I loved this project in the kitchen of our last home. I wanted glass upper cabinets, and came up with a super affordable way to add them on top of the new lower cabinets. You can read the post here, the after image is below. I also added battery-powered, remote controlled puck lights inside the cabinet, much easier than wiring, these work great inside a glass cabinet or can even be used under your cabinets for ambiance lighting.
I had almost forgotten about this post below, but it was so easy. I have since used this marble paper to top other pieces of furniture that had seen better days, it works great.
I used faux marble contact paper over top of the glass shelf on our bar, it was an easy way to make it a little more special. You can find the paper here, you can use it on most surfaces for a fast and easy new look, the complete post is here. I have linked the contact paper in our Amazon store here.
One final project that is so easy, it just takes a glue gun and some ribbon to jazz up a plain lampshade. You can see how Christy did it here.
