After all the ups and downs of this year, I have enjoyed spending time this month making all the areas in our home feel happy and festive. Today I have two more decorated spaces to show you, our mudroom and our loft area. One has traditional decor, the other is an upbeat blue and white color scheme.
If you missed it, you can see our main living area tree in this post here. I am really enjoying the ‘classic Christmas’ feel in the space this year (below).
Decorating this year has certainly been the distraction I need from the state of the world, so I might have done a *little* more this year than I have in other years. OK…. so maybe we have four trees and I still might put up one more! (A ‘family’ tree in our breakfast room 😀 ) but it has been a nice way to pass the time while we’re still ‘staying home’ right now.
This is the first time I have decorated our mudroom for the holidays, so I had to share it. The mudroom is right off our kitchen, we go in and out of our home all day long through this entrance so I thought it would be fun to add a bit of Christmas decor. The black and white color scheme (read about the mural here and the trim here) makes it easy to add seasonal touches at this time of year.
Of course Auggie never misses a photo opportunity, though in this case the door was open for some natural light while I was taking photos, so he was probably trying to decide if that was an invitation to head right on outside. He rarely leaves my side (thus his appearance in most of my home photos), which I think is due both to his breed and his backstory as a rescue so rest assured, he stayed put.
For this space I used decor I already had, a small tree (these were a set, the other one is set up right next to our large main Christmas tree) and added a plaid scarf to a basket I found at a local vintage shop. The bench was a steal from here, and the sign is several years old though this one is similar. I hung an inexpensive garland along with a tartan bow to the sign and the space felt instantly more festive.
I have one more space and Christmas tree to show you, this one has a very non-traditional blue and white color scheme. I typically use this inexpensive tree in my daughter’s room, but this year she didn’t want a tree (her room is covered in LED lights like all pre-teens right now, so I guess she thought a tree would be redundant). I already had some blue ornaments on hand and had moved some up my blue and white china upstairs to our loft area when I added the traditional Christmas decor in our living room so it was an easy theme to run with.
My kids are all at the age where a tree in their room doesn’t matter to them, but I figured this way they have this tree in this space just outside their rooms.
It isn’t the most traditional color scheme but it does work perfectly with our blue velvet couch. I have plans to transition this space into an office area for me after the holidays as my pink office will officially become my husband’s since it doesn’t look like tech companies are going back to work anytime soon. This area also housed the inventory and was the shipping area for my online Holiday Home store too, so I have been in this space more than usual the last few weeks.
You can see more of this space in this post here. We have tried to make all the spaces in our home useful and functional, one of our goals when we built and downsized a bit a few years ago. I had intended this area to be a teen ‘hang out’ space, but our basement is serving that purpose these days so I feel comfortable taking it back and making it work for me.
I have to admit, I love the blue and white tree. It’s not at all traditional but it makes me happy and it definitely brightens up the space. I might even leave it up well into January, because, why not?
I start decorating for Christmas early this year but the advantage of that is by now I am officially decorated and done. Outside of a few gifts I still have to wrap (and this week my parent’s are moving so we’ll be busy helping them get settled in their new home!) I am feeling ready for the holidays. I am looking forward to spending time these next two weeks doing all the holiday things–like baking and watching Christmas movies and such. We may even get some snow here in Virginia this week, fingers crossed, that would be a very fun way to get us all in the holiday spirit!
Thanks for stopping by today!
If you love the blue and white (like I do!), you might also enjoy this home tour we shared last year of Christy’s friend Ashly’s beautiful home, it’s truly a favorite of mine!

Amy, everything is beautiful! I’ve always LOVED your laundry room and especially that wallpaper!! The blue tree in the upstairs foyer area is gorgeous – leave it up as long as you like! We have left our four trees up easily a month past Christmas – and why? because of the work involved and they were always so pretty! Everyone please enjoy your holidays however spent! MERRY CHRISTMAS!!
