And…suddenly it is November! It seems to come faster each year doesn’t it? We are very slowly gearing up around here. Last week I shared Thanksgiving inspiration for your table, we don’t want to skip over that holiday. Today though, I wanted to help you get a jump start on your holiday decor by sharing the Christmas trees we own and a look at how we’ve decorated them over the years.
This is the time of year when I always enjoying thinking about how I’ll decorate for Christmas, I am pretty over the top when it comes to Christmas decor after all. It is fun to look back on our previous homes and color schemes. I have to admit, even I forget some of the things I have done in my own home until I see the photos here on the blog. This year I found an inspiration picture with a green and gold tree so I may try to capture that in our decor.
Above you can see how I decorated two years ago and below was the previous year. Both years I stayed within traditional colors, I just used more red for a very traditional tartan theme, still a favorite (below).
I have a 9′ King of Christmas flocked tree, which I consider our main tree even though in our last home I also decorated several other smaller trees, you can also find it here in a lit version (mine is not lit). I use this tree in our two-story entrance hallway. I go back and forth on if it is better to have your tree pre-lit or light it yourself, obviously it is simpler if your tree is pre-lit but most trees I have had eventually lose the lights and then you have to light it yourself anyway, so I am not sure it’s worth the money to save a small amount of time. Also, in my last home this tree worked well with our 9′ ceilings but it also is tall enough for this two-story space.
For our new home, I purchased this tree shown below for the living room. I like that it feels airy, and you can see the decorations and I was ready to go back to the traditional green after years of doing the flocked trees. I love the classic Christmas look, it was very simple to decorate with just old-fashioned battery candles and the sparkling ornaments.
Here it is in our living room last year, you can see my whole holiday tour here.
For a similar look, this one below is also quite popular and may sell out. You can find it available here right now. Note that this is a 7.5 foot tree, which is perfect for lower ceilings. You can find a taller pre-lit version here.
Christy used a pretty color scheme of aqua, white and gold in her German apartment. If memory serves, she decorated this tree early enough for photos for our annual home tour, but also had a traditional fresh Christmas tree as is the German tradition. This 6′ flocked tree she used is one of our all time favorite finds, it’s just $35 and we both own it; we’ve decorated them for secondary spaces (like bedrooms and offices) so many times and in so many ways over the years, here are some of my favorite looks from over the years.
I added the 6′ tree in my loft/office several years ago and used all the blue and white I had along with it (read the post here), and here it is the year before in my daughter’s room.
Christy did a ballet-themed tree in her daughter’s room using the same tree several years ago too. This budget friendly tree is perfect for a kids’ room or a playroom.
For the last several years I also decorated a 7′ flocked tree in our dining room in our last home and in our office in the years before that. That tree is now sold out, but this one is very similar.
Here are a few more color schemes we’ve had over the years. In 2019 I went a bit out of my comfort zone when I found some beautiful teal/green ornaments at the Lucketts Holiday market. I love looking back on our decor that year. I really went a bit overboard with decorating because we hosted a big holiday party, of course I was thinking it would become a tradition but of course the world ground to a halt a few short months later. I need to dig the photos out and write a post about that party, it sure was fun! That is the 9′ King of Christmas Prince flocked tree. You can see how I DIY’d the garland here. Attaching the garland to our archway was a bit of a challenge but it really was pretty in the space.
If you like non-traditional color schemes, here are two of my favorite blue and white trees. Above is Christy’s from several years ago in her North Carolina cottage (see more here), and below is her friend Ashly’s tree–one of my all time favorite holiday home tours. You can see it all here.
Finally, I was had fun decorating our breakfast bar last year even though the space wasn’t fully finished. We added this cabinetry in our kitchen that created a great bar for entertaining and extra storage (read more here). You can find a similar sign here and similar wreaths for the cabinets here.
