Today I am back with one more paint color post, because this topic is always among our most-read posts and always something we get asked about. Paint can be tricky and there are a variety of factors that impact how a color will look in your home vs. how it looks online, but these are some of our tried and true darker paint shades we’ve used in our own homes.
These are ideas for accent or statement wall colors for your home. Sometimes painting an entire room is daunting, or a popular design strategy is just to use a pop of color on one wall. Using a dark wall as a backdrop can create interest in an otherwise low-key space. I most recently did just this in my husband’s new home office, you can see it here (and be sure to read about the easiest way to paint a wall in this post here.)
The color above is Sherwin Williams Urbane Bronze, which is a deeply saturated brownish gray. It’s the color of the year so you know it’s a good one! It definitely makes a statement, I thought it was perfect for this masculine feeling space.
I actually came very close to using another favorite color, Benjamin Moore’s Kendall Charcoal, in my husband’s office. You can see it here in our former home library and it’s a cooler but still impactful dark gray. I have also seen this in bedrooms and feel like it is a great option for a cozy, moody space. You can the DIY Built-In Shelves here.
A few homes ago, Christy inherited this dark gray/brown paint color when they moved into their home in Savannah. Lucky for her it works perfectly with their white furniture in their bedroom and the front hallway! This color is Sherwin-Williams Weimaraner.
In her next house, the bathroom was a pretty dark brown with gray undertones, this color is Pittsburgh Paints Wicker Basket. It looks lovely with the warm cream distressed cabinets.
This space is from way back in our blog archive, this nautical-inspired bath is in our friend Terry’s home. This color is perfect dark blue for a boy bathroom. The color is December Eve by BEHR Ultra (in Eggshell).
Finally, this color isn’t as saturated but I still found it to be perfect in our last bathroom. The space was soothing and restful, you can see more here. The color is Functional Gray by Sherwin Williams.
That rounds out my list of favorite deeply saturated colors we’ve used, if you are looking for something slightly lighter you may want to check out this post here with our favorite gray/white/cream paint colors.

You are so right! I know we’ve used that color, in fact I searched our photo archives trying to find it (unsuccessfully!). It is one of my favorites too! Thanks for adding it in the mix! XO, Amy
