A Sweet Christmas Treat–Cherry Limeade Recipe

As a part of our homeschool experience, my children are involved in a once-a-week tutorial program.  The wonderful tutorial my kids attend gives them a day of enrichment–art, music, drama, creative writing, Bible, science lab, and PE for my daughter, and some very intense math, history, and English classes for my son.  So even though I thought I’d hung up my “Room Mom” credentials a few years ago, it turns out that the tutorial program has a Christmas party, too.  And hey, I’m not going to be a Scrooge about it–we should celebrate Christmas every chance we get, in my opinion!

The seventh graders in my son’s class were craving a little sugar this morning (when are they not?!). They start the day with algebra and need all the energy they can muster.  I found some darling red and white striped paper straws at Home Goods last week and decided I wanted to contribute a drink so I could use them.

I’m addicted to Sonic’s cherry limeade, and I’ve tried a few different recipes before.  This is a tweak of several of them, but you might want to taste as you go since some like it sweet and some like it tart!

~Cherry Limeade~

1 Two-liter lemon-lime soda

1 jar maraschino cherries

1 c. fresh lime juice (Yes, you can cheat and use the bottled kind!  No judgment here!)

1/2 c. sugar (more or less to taste)

Mix all the ingredients together, including the juice from the jar of cherries, and stir until the sugar dissolves.  I cheated this morning and used bottled lime juice, although the fresh really does taste better.  When I use fresh limes, I cut them up after I juice them and throw them into the mix–they look so pretty with the cherries.  If you don’t have limes or lime juice, a can of frozen limeade concentrate will do in a pinch, although this will make a tarter batch of cherry limeade.  It’s not rocket science, though!

The fun part is garnishing the glass and the pitcher.  Of course, I pulled out my darling striped straws, and some red and white napkins from Target.  I used one of my favorite printables EVER–the “Drink Me” Mad-Hatter-inspired labels–to dress up the pitcher, along with a red ribbon {visit Betsy at B. Nute Productions to print out the Eat Me/ Drink Me labels–clicking the photo below will take you to her site.  While you’re there, take a look around–her other stuff is *awesome*}.

They downed the entire pitcher, so it looks like it was a hit!

Whipped Apple Cider Martinis {Halloween/Fall}

Oh Yum!!! If you need anything more to like about Fall, here is the perfect drink to toast the season. In my house, as soon as the apple cider hits the stores this drink becomes a one of our favorite adult treats.

I have mentioned my husband’s talent for bartending previously, he concocted this drink with the fixings from an ‘Apple Cider Bar’ we had at an Engagement Party we hosted last year. The couple liked it so much they served it as their “Signature Cocktail” at the wedding! It’s always a hit.

You can tweak this to your liking, and I apologize to those who don’t drink alcohol, you could obviously play around with whipped cream and apple cider but using the flavors in the alcohol really is what gives this drink its fun flavor.

You need apple cider (obviously), I typically use Trader Joe’s but any kind is fine, and “Whipped Cream” Vodka and “Buttershots” Liquor.

You also need ice, a shaker with a strainer, and ice cold martini glasses, something we seem to always have on hand in our freezer! I coated the rim of this glass with a sugar/cinnamon mix to make them a little more festive.

To make the drinks: Mix 2 parts vodka to 1 part buttershots in the shaker (with some ice) to your liking, then pour in the apple cider and shake well–very well–you want the ice to break up a bit and chill the drink. I would recommend 2:1 on the liquors then at least 2 parts cider–but that still may be too strong for some, so adjust accordingly. Be warned: these are strong drinks–just like a classic martini. This drink is also a great after dinner/dessert drink because they are on the sweet side.

And, if you are hosting a Halloween Party, you might notice these drinks coordinate perfectly! :)

Hope you enjoy a perfect Fall weekend!

Cheers!

Tropical Vodka Fizz

Happy Weekend & Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!

In honor of the weekend and holiday and because I had a small get together yesterday, I wanted to share this delightful spring/summer cocktail I threw together.

I am calling it a Tropical Vodka Fizz and it is as refreshing as it is delicious.

Ingredients:

  • Bolthouse Farms Passion Orange Guava Juice
  • Vodka
  • 1 bottle of a light and semi sweet champagne (look for Sec or Demi Sec on the bottle)
  • Sweet and Sour Mix
  • 1 lime, zested and juiced
  • 1 lemon, zested and juiced
  • Frozen pineapple chunks

Directions

  1. In a martini Shaker pour equal parts vodka and sour mix (approx. 4-5 shots of each).
  2. Add in the juice of the lemon, the juice of the lime and their zest.  Shake with ice until combined.
  3. Pour shaker contents into a pretty serving pitcher.
  4. Add in appox. 1 cup of the Bolthouse Farms Passion Orange Guava Juice.
  5. Add 1/3 bottle champagne
  6. Add in the frozen pineapple and stir.
  7. Garnish with pineapple, lime wedges, umbrellas or anything else that makes you happy!

Raspberry Martini Recipe

Here it is! As promised, and served at my recent Dinner Party. These drinks are yummy, but first I must tell you:

Here is what you will need:

A martini shaker

Ice (preferably crushed)

Raspberry Vodka

Razz-ma-tazz or other raspberry liquor

Sour Mix (not “sweet & sour” mix)

Squeeze of fresh lemon

Ice cold Martini glasses (I recommend storing them in your freezer)

My bartender husband uses a ratio of 1:1:1 which makes for a very strong drink. I make them with extra sour mix and sometimes add some lemonade or other juice to “lighten” them. But you basically fill your shaker about halfway up with crushed ice, then add equal amounts (use a measuring cup or other pouring device like a shot glass) of the vodka, raspberry liquor and the sour mix. Shake well. (Bartender husband advice: shake really well– till your hand is too cold to shake any longer!). Then, using the strainer that comes with your martini shaker, strain the drink into a cold martini glass. ENJOY!

He garnished this with lemon, but fresh raspberries would be very nice too.

We make them for the Holidays too.

And, if you think these look delicious, wait till you see what I just had the other day at the hairdresser (yes my hairdresser is very cool). A very yummy Carrot Cake Martini…recipe on that one coming soon!
