Pet-Friendly Cleaning and Deodorizing

This is one of those sponsored posts that isn’t really a sponsored post, because this is a product that’s a perfect fit for our house and our blog.  You know that we’re all about our pets around here, and if you’re the same, then please read on!

Harley is coming up on one year of being an only dog, and while I know that he’s lonely with Sunny gone {Sunny’s story is here}, in some ways it’s nice having just one pet.  Remember, at one time our “zoo” consisted of two rescue dogs, a cat, a hamster, and two fish!  I had to vacuum every single day, and I carried a lint roller around in my purse–it was either that or give up wearing black.

OK, to be truthful, I still have to vacuum pretty much every day.  Golden retrievers shed constantly, and even with just one, I still have five pounds of hair on my dark hardwood floors every day.  He’s so worth it, though!

You all know that I make most of my own cleaners, and when I do buy cleaning products, I’m very careful that they’re green, and safe to use around my pets (and kids, of course!).  So I was really looking forward to trying Skout’s Honor, because they’re a premium household cleaning brand with a line of thoughtfully designed products for individuals and families with pets.

Their products are non-toxic, plant-derived, biodegradable, bio-renewable, cruelty-free, AND made in the USA. Plus, through their Skout’s Paw Pledge, they donate a day’s worth of food to a shelter animal with every product sold, and since we only adopt rescue and shelter pets, I absolutely love that!

They sent me their Stain & Odor Remover and Odor Eliminator to try out.  Since I don’t like my home to look (or smell) like I have a dog, AND we’re keeping the house spic and span for showings, I was looking forward to giving these two products a whirl.

I started with the Odor Eliminator. It’s a daily-use deodorizer that targets specific odor molecules and eliminates them on contact.  You can spray it in the air or on surfaces. First, I hit the rug in the living room.  Sweet, stinky Sunny dog lived on this rug and I feel like it still carries eau de canine.

While I was at it, I sprayed the black upholstered bench that we use as a coffee table, and the sofa.  While I take the slipcovers off and wash them every month or two, they definitely need freshening up between washes. Plus, Harley crawls up on the furniture every chance he gets! (Isn’t he a nice model, by the way?)

Of course, the Odor Eliminator is safe to use on your pet’s bed or blankets. Harley loves his bed and it’s nice to be able to freshen it up in between washings.

The Odor Eliminator has a light scent; you can tell that it’s not trying to mask or cover odors.  I liked the results in the living room, so I moved into my nemesis…the teenage boy’s room.

I hit the carpets, bedding, and closet in here, and the sweaty gym sock smell abated. I went back about an hour later, and it still smelled fresh.

Speaking of sweaty feet, if you’ve ever known a ballerina, then you know that pointe shoes can get pretty nasty!  My daughter’s room is full of them, too.

They’re not supposed to get wet (although they get sweaty all the time so I’m not sure how THAT works), but I shot the Odor Eliminator over and around them with great effect.

Last, but not least, I put a bottle in the bathroom to see how it worked as an air freshener.  Really well!

The bottle says it even works on skunk odors, but believe me when I tell you I had NO desire to test that claim.

Next up was their Stain & Odor Eliminator.  It’s surfactant-based and has three times the cleaning power of other products.  It’s formulated to attack stains and odors from all the nasty stuff:  urine, feces, blood, mud, grease, and even wine (OK, wine isn’t nasty, it’s tasty, but it is a tough stain).

If you have a puppy, kitten, or toddler, then this is a cleaning weapon you need in your arsenal. Need to clean a stain on rugs, carpets, upholstery, or clothing?  This is the product for you.

I shot some of it on my daughter’s shirt that still had a grease stain on it after I treated it and washed with my usual stain remover. I was impressed with the results:

These never expire, either, so your bottle will work effectively until it’s empty.  Not bad!
