Summer is in full swing and that means the 4th of July is upon us. We’ll be heading to a big family celebration that is rumored to include a patriotic outfit contest, the reciting of the Gettysburg Address (for children) and other fun activities the hosts have dreamed up to celebrate America. My job is to come up with an epic dessert platter, so I am scheming on that (I’ll be sure to post it on Instagram if it’s worthy!). Today I wanted to share some ideas from our archives, some of these go way back, but they are easy ways to dress up your home and your celebration in honor of summer’s biggest holiday.
Christy always does red, white and blue right. Here’s a look (way) back from her house in Nashville:
She made a smart investment in these pull down flag banners years ago, and you can find them {here}. You can also use traditional bunting; like I did below (though the center one had blown away) We just use 3M command hooks to hang them on the front porch.
Christy also used bunting on her back porch in North Carolina, this home was on a golf course so I am sure the golfers enjoyed the patriotic spirit.
If you’re hosting for the holiday, it’s so easy to incorporate red, white, and blue into your table decor and even your food.

If you need a few ideas for the grill, this flank steak marinade is amazing, as are these pork chops. Our best hamburger recipe is here, too, if you want to keep it traditional. Any of those meats are perfect paired with a side of macaroni and cheese–it’s always a hit! If you prefer lighter fare in the summer heat, try this wood-fired fig and prosciutto pizza or steak salad.
