Today we bring back our Spring Open House series {You can see the homes from last year HERE}. You’ve already seen her featured several times as a favorite via our Pretty Preppy Party and we loved her rooms so much we invited her to kick off our Spring Open House. So, without further ado…Here is Heather from The Heathered Nest.…

Welcome to the nest. The Heathered Nest. It is quite a big honor for a new kid on the block (not to be confused with subject of a certain Bop magazine poster I may or may not have had hanging in my bedroom from ages 9 to 39 11, NKOTB) to be a part of this tour with such heavy hitters in the blogosphere.
We live pretty far out in the countryside, but you’re almost there.
Yep, right through those trees…
You found us! Welcome home.
We bought this house in the country almost two years ago, and it’s been non-stop renovations ever since…if you want to see some unfathomable BEFORE shots, you gotta check out our blog. Built in my favorite decade to have lived through, but not one I particularly want to continue living in…this place was totally 80’s…like, grody to the max. (But my KNOTB poster fit in perfectly).
As my teen crush Jordan would have said…or sung…”step by step” we’re making this place ours. And we’d be thrilled to take you on a little “spring” house tour.
This is our foyer. It’s filled with thrift store and craigslist finds.
That burlap settee was one of my first upholstery projects.
Here’s the dining room. Sadly, it’s never used. I know. We eat as a family, always…just crowded around the kitchen island.
But I love this room. It’s drenched in natural light. Took A LOT of “hangin’ tough” and prayers to get it to this point after having found termite damage (WORST experience ever…more painful than childbirth). But, eventually we were able to turn lemons into lemonade, which is fitting for this very colorful space.
We have a small powder room on the main level of our home. And it’s a showcase for this 1940’s cast iron sink, which happens to be my favorite item in the whole home. I found it on Craigslist, and after being re-furbished, I think it’s an absolute treasure.
Welcome to the family room. Still kind of half-baked, but from where it started, it’s come a ways. The floors have been re-finished, fireplace, walls and trim painted, faux beams installed, ceiling fan booted and chandelier teed up.
It’s another space in the house that has a lot of light throughout the day, and that makes me happy.
Down to the basement we go…
where we recently finished an entire overhaul. You gotta go check out the BEFORE shots of this dungeon…then when you see these AFTERS I can say/sing “Didn’t I blow your mind this time” ala NKOTB at you. And if you say “no”, well stop the tour here, cuz I ain’t got nothin’ else that will impress you.
We overhauled the bathroom down here, which has been dubbed “Napoleon’s throne room”.
It’s our guest bath.
And it’s next door to our guest bedroom. If you are inclined to stay awhile, this will be your room. The guest room was one of the first overhauls in this house, but it’s still one of my favorites.
We added a large window in this space. Before, there was absolutely no natural light in here at all.
The kids will definitely want to show you their rooms. Our daughter’s space is still a work in progress, but it’s coming along.
And as long as she has her piggy blankets and her books, she’s a happy kid no matter what.
Our oldest son is a train aficionado. This is his space.
And our youngest, Sweet Cheeks, he loves mud and bugs, and all things out-of-doors. And this is his quarters.
The project we completed most recently was our kids bathroom. We finished it in six weeks, with a $2000 budget, and came in spending about $1850.
And we all are thrilled with the results.
Slowly but surely, we’re getting rid of the “wrong stuff” and giving this place the “right stuff” (get it? another AWESOME NKOTB song reference…can’t help myself).
For our family though, having relocated out here to the country from a much more urban scene…the real draw for most of the clan is found outside…where those kids will run for hours, get dirty, explore, make wishes blowing on dandelions, and enjoy that age old pastime of just being kids. It’s a beautiful life.
