I thought we would talk today about the ‘Coastal Grandmother’ trend that started on TikTok and is making its way to other social media. I never imagined I’d immediately identify with a TikTok trend (really, it’s a rather scary social media platform in my opinion!) but the ideals of the ‘Coastal Grandmother’ will likely resonate with some of you as well. Today I am sharing what the trend is about and some ways to incorporate it into your lifestyle.
Think of a Coastal Grandmother as the older female character in many favorite feel-good movies–like Diane Keaton in Something’s Got to Give or Meryl Streep in It’s Complicated. It’s about emulating how the character’s lived in their homes, what they wore, how their homes were decorated or how they entertained friends and family. Truly, I think it’s about cultivating a relaxed and beautiful lifestyle, one with picnics on the beach (with an elegant charcuterie and wine of course), cashmere sweaters, bountiful gardens, fresh flowers–all the things that create a more elevated, everyday experience in life.
It’s not just for older women either, the ideals of these characters are so popular they are being embraced by women of all ages, especially younger women, like the one on TikTok who coined the term. {Southern LIving wrote an article with more about the trend, here if you need more details.}
The TikTok influencer (@lexnicoleta) defines a coastal grandmother as someone who loves Nancy Meyer’s movies, coastal vibes, Ina Garten, interiors, entertaining and such. I know I immediately identified with this persona, I mean I love all those things too!
I think most of us would love to embrace this trend; to live beautifully, to make the most of the time with family and friends and to be hospitable in a casual, but still elevated way that allows you to enjoy the process.
It’s also a style statement, as a Coastal Grandmother dresses casually but still elegantly, favoring linen shirts and cashmere sweaters, understated, classic jewelry and mostly in neutral colors.
Below are some of my favorite items to up the Coastal Grandmother look~
Cashmere Wrap | Classic Gold Hoop Earrings | Blanc Willow Blouse | Tortoise Sunglasses
Pretty Wine Goblet | Beach Sweater | Picnic Basket | Block Print Napkins
Seagrass Vase | Blue Boyfriend Oxford Shirt (not pictured)
From a chic cashmere wrap or a casual sweater for a beach stroll, these are stylish everyday finds. I also found a few items that will effortlessly elevate casual entertaining like pretty block print napkins and a seagrass vase to keep fresh flowers on display. Everything in the new Julia Bertzheimer line at Pottery Barn feels very “coastal grandmother” to me, have you seen it? I included her napkins and cache pots above, I also love this tablecloth. It would be perfect for outdoor dining–very coastal grandmother!
I hope you enjoyed reading about this, I thought it was a fun way to characterize what many of us aspire to do with our lives, to live both beautifully and peacefully. I’d love your thoughts!
