Over the holidays I gave my oldest son’s room a bit of a refresh. It was very simple and probably a little overdue. It’s not the most fabulous makeover but I still wanted to share it because simple and affordable projects are always good. I believe it’s the small, personal touches that make a home a home.
Since my son is away at college, his room just sits and waits for his visits home so it doesn’t get much attention. He only uses it a few months a year but we still want him to have his room to come home to, at least for a little while longer. As any parent of a teen boy knows, room decor is the least of their concerns and it will stay messy most of the time anyway. Which explains why you see very few teen boy rooms on decor blogs!
My son took some of his pictures back to college to hang in his apartment so his walls were looking bare and his bedding was getting tired, so I just did a small update in the space. I figured we could transition the new items to another space down the road when he has truly moved out. I decided to create an inexpensive gallery wall to hang over his bed with vintage Audabon wildlife prints. The boys around here love anything to do with hunting, fishing or the outdoors so this suited his space but they also could also transition to my husband’s office down the road (or maybe my son will take them to decorate his future home, that would be OK too).
I ordered the prints from an ETSY seller here, these were printed and shipped to me vs. having to print them myself (which saves some $), I wanted to make this simple. I ordered a set of frames from Amazon (HERE) to hang the prints in. These frames came with special hooks to hang them that were really easy to use. With a bit of measuring and hanging, I had the new prints up and over his bed in just a short amount of time.
I also added some new bedding, keeping the plain white bedspread but I replacing his duvet cover with this plaid set. We’ve had the striped shams (from here) so I didn’t use the matching plaid pillow shams but still might down the road. I ordered the monogrammed pillow from here ( I did the navy twill, 12×20 with his monogram), these are a great deal and polish up a bed perfectly.
Below I compiled at all the sources in the room, I didn’t take photos of his desk because honestly it is a mess! In high school I got him the largest bulletin board Hobby Lobby makes and he filled it will all his high school memories, certificates, photos and such and it hangs over his desk. It’s not blog/photo-worthy but it’s the story of his life so we’re happy to keep it up for the time being, anything to keep him coming home! I have included the sources in his room below the collage if you are tackling a teen boy room.
