Happy Fri-Yay everyone! I am SO ready for this weekend to arrive, anyone with me? The internet seems to be buzzing these days with the concept of a capsule wardrobe, so today I thought I’d share my favorite spring ‘basics’. I feel like the capsule idea has been fueled by the Marie Kondo organizing trend, I am guessing I am not the only one that feels the need to simplify my closet along with other aspects of my life.

Our posts contain affiliate links, your price doesn’t change if you purchase through these links, please see our full disclosure policy here.

I did a massive closet purge in January, but even after doing that I admitted to myself that like most people, I probably wear 20% of what is in my closet 80% of the time. Once I fully processed that, I have been trying to be better about impulse purchases or buying clothes specifically to wear to one event.  It was enlightening to spend some time looking at what I already had and tended to wear most.   It helped me see what I needed to purchase to fill in some gaps, then I pulled together several spring outfits to cover me for pretty much any occasion.

This is currently my favorite outfit, I’ll start with it! The top is from Stitch Fix  {you can ask your Stylist for the Moon & Sky white lace top {or a similar one is HERE not from Stitch Fix}.  The jeans are here, I wear them or these jeans {sale!} 99% of the time. These wedge sandals as a great all-around sandal, they have a cute wedge heel but it’s not super-high so I can run all over town in them {update, those are sold out for 2017, this year I am investing in this popular everyday shoe.}. The chevron necklace is here and it’s only $16, I seriously wear it all the time. A similar cross-body bag is here and available in the prettiest colors, what a great spring basic.

We’ve had cooler temps this week so the above has been my go-to outfit. The striped boatneck shirt {2017 update–similar: how cute is this Kate Spade version?} is SO soft, I pair it with my same favorite jeans and add the gold accessories to at least pretend it’s spring around here. I totally heart Jack Rogers sandals {they were Jackie Kennedy’s favorite, so that’s good enough for me 🙂 } and the reversible tote is perfect to hold all the stuff I lug around. I often drop my cross-body bag in it along with my computer and planner so I can get work done wherever the day takes me. The tote bag has so many rave reviews and they have some new colors for spring. The necklace is from HERE, but a tip– keep your eyes on Jane.com as they have this style often too.

This is another of my go-to outfits. This striped shirt {similar here} is so comfortable, I love how it looks with olive cargo pants , they are a nice break from jeans. Leopard flats {or here} are my go-to for a touch of fun. The necklace upgrades the outfit, it’s from StitchFix {pin this pic if you’d like it in a fix} but again, any statement jewelry piece helps a casual outfit look pulled together.

I finally admitted to myself that I spent way to much money buying clothes for dressier occasions like date night, luncheons, conferences etc. and then they all sat in my closet while I wore out the casual pieces I had. I currently spend most of my weekend on the sidelines watching my kids play sports. Since we often go from games to other events, sometimes I need to sport more than yoga pants and a baseball cap {just don’t hold me to that for the 8AM games, please 🙂 } so I recently purchased this cute baseball tee from Jane.com {seller is Coco & Main}.  I also invested in a military/cargo jacket, they have been all the rage it seems and it’s been amazing. I shopped for awhile to find just the right one {mine above is unfortunately sold out} but a very similar is here.  I forgot to show the shoes but I wear this outfit with classic white Sperrys. Comfort, comfort, comfort.

tunic and flares
This outfit would photograph better on {but I am terrible at that fashion selfie thing, you all know that} since you can’t see how cute the jeans are. The trick is to wear the tunic {this shirt is SUCH a great basic} with a ‘half-tuck’ –as in just the front tucked in but the back hanging out {it’s what the cool kids are doing, FYI #internetfashionrules}. Flared jeans are back in style and let’s be honest, so much more comfortable to wear than skinnies 🙂

chevron-dress-jean-jacket
When I need to dress up this is totally my go-to outfit. This flame-stitch maxi dress came from StitchFix last summer {it’s the Loveappella brand and this one is similar, the solid version is available here, the fit and the fabric on this dress is perfection}. A classic jean jacket makes the dress more casual and keeps me warm; I dress it up with some fun cage heels when I want to feel fancy.  I have worn this exact outfit so many places–the Haven conference, graduation parties, my Dad’s High School Hall of Fame induction {go Dad!} and to Church countless times. It’s pretty much no-fail!

There are a few other articles of clothing that are on my essential list that I realized I didn’t photograph like white jeans and a gray boyfriend tee, which I pair with a fun necklace, I’d probably wear that outfit daily if I could get away with it!

I am not sure I’ll stop shopping completely now that I have organized these outfits but it was an interesting exercise, and now I know I can reach for them when needed.  I can’t see myself going totally over to the capsule wardrobe concept with only 20 items in black, white and navy as some people do, but there is an appeal in simplifying. Have you tried that?

So what did I miss? What Spring fashion basics can you not live without?

Here’s to the weekend everyone!

Ha, narrowing things down sure is a process! Well worth it though, thanks so much 🙂

Love these outfits! I have a question for you – do you wear socks with your comfy white Sperrys that you paired with the jeans, baseball tee, and military jacket? If so, what kind do you wear that stays on your heel and doesn’t slide down into your shoe? Thank you!

Ha–great question, but actually I tend to not wear socks with this style shoe. I know I should but I am usually racing out the door 🙂 XOXO

I just love the pieces you put together, I am ordering a few things from Nordstrom! Will you share where your cheetah rug is from, I have been looking for one!?

Hi Lindy–of course, the rug is from Ballard Designs. It’s actually an indoor/outdoor rug but it works fine indoors. I love it!

Plus sizes don’t always do well in jeans, so I use skorts, or cotton clam diggers/slacks. Also a few cotton dresses, some I’ve had for years. [Wish the new ones had pockets.] Still need to get rid of 1/2 my clothes.
