I think it has already been more than a month since I have written any updates on our new house! This won’t be a long post, because well, there hasn’t been much happening to write about 🙂 but I thought I would put together a quick update. The exciting news is that as of now, things are moving very quickly and I expect to have much more to tell you (and show you, and I’ll be covering the building process in our Instagram stories if you follow us there) over the next few weeks. You can read posts about our move HERE and the new house HERE and HERE if you need to catch up.
In one of our meetings with the builder this week, they did confirm we should be able to close by the very end of June. That seems fast to me at this point, but like I said things are really moving along. This will work out well as we need to vacate our rental about that time; since the building process seemed to be slow to start I was beginning to worry we’d be homeless for a few weeks this summer if the house wasn’t done. Hopefully, that won’t be the case!
They have completed the grading on our lot and the foundation is going in now so we should have framing and walls done within the next few weeks. We did have a major issue earlier this week when we discovered that a communication error caused the window in the basement to be deleted, which is a big deal because it would mean that we couldn’t build a bedroom down there (by code a bedroom needs a window for egress). We think that a basement bedroom will be nice to have when our college-age boys come home, yes we are thinking ahead a few years, but we plan to be in this home until that stage of our lives. Not to mention the more bedrooms = the more resale $, right? The situation was resolved, thankfully with just a few extra fees to us (boo) but in the end, I was grateful we caught it before it was really too late.
To pass the time waiting for the real excitement to start, I have been doing some pre-planning on the decor for this house. I don’t know that it will be drastically different than our last house {you can see that whole tour HERE} but I feel like my taste has evolved over the last few years. For a long time I have had varying degrees of farmhouse in my decor, thank you Joanna Gaines, just when I thought I’d outgrown the ‘shabby chic’ phase, it came roaring right back when Fixer Upper took off, right? #shiplapforever! LOL. I think that ship has finally sailed for me, I now find myself gravitating more toward cool neutrals with pops of warm metals and more texture.
{I still love this ‘inspiration’ room I showed you in an earlier post}
I have been filling shopping carts, jotting down ideas in my little “house” notebook and filling up my Pinterest boards in anticipation of being able to move in. Last weekend World Market had a major 30% off sale and I pulled the trigger on some things, including this beaded chandelier below. It’s a great price to begin with and on sale was a steal, I plan to hang it in my office.
I also purchased this cowhide rug, which can pretty much go anywhere and again, was a great price. I also envision using it in my office, which will be just inside the front door and probably be quite similar to my former home office, as I really loved that space. That room has a pretty but neutral patterned carpet so this will definitely add some interest.
I also ordered this fringe pillow, Target had a very similar one last year but it sold out before I could get it, and I have been kicking myself ever since. It could pretty much go anywhere and I’d be happy. {FYI: You can get a coupon code for 15% off if you sign up for World Market emails}.
Finally, I am very close to ordering these barstools while they are on sale (they are 30% off with free shipping right now), but I am terrified they will get filthy immediately. Does anyone have them? I am wondering how they will hold up even with a generous amount of scotch guard, but again with three kids, I am not sure fabric is the best idea. I really love how they look, please tell me in comments if you have experience with these!
I have also been looking at artwork from Minted, as we have several walls that will need to be filled up. Minted has beautiful art by independent artists at good prices, especially for framed art.
You may remember this picture we had in our Library, it is called Mesmerize, and I plan to use it in our new dining room probably with a similar paint color on the walls (above is Kendall Charcoal by Benjamin Moore, the post on this room is HERE). I really love this print below because the colors are within my usual gray, blue and gold mix so it could go anywhere in our new house, though right now, I am thinking bedroom.
I also am a bit obsessed with this print below because it could have been painted of the lake we vacation on in Maine. This print will find a place in our new home somewhere for sure.
I have also been compiling lights and chandelier options, as I really want to replace the builder standard lighting as soon as possible. I am dreaming about this beaded light below for the breakfast room, which will be our main dining area. I did find this very similar chandelier as well, it is less expensive (and 20% off), so it is also very much a contender.
I have a really fun collaboration coming up (as I write this I am actually waiting for the furniture delivery truck), so soon I’ll be showing you everything that will go in our new upstairs loft area. It’s all just a bit out of my comfort zone, I picked some fun colors and a bit more of a modern style than I typically gravitate toward, but that area will be a teen girl’s hangout area so it gave me a chance to be extra creative. Stay tuned for that in just a few weeks!
I better sign off, I could run on about all my decor ideas all day but I promised a short post. I’ll be back on Friday with a spring break fashion post, I am SO ready to break out the flip flops and t-shirts!
PS Thank you for the kind comments on my parent’s bathroom makeover, there is a live video tour up on Instagram stories today if you want to see more!
