A New Glass Cabinet In Our Kitchen

Today I am sharing a piece of furniture we recently added to our kitchen, but before I get to that just a quick reminder that the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is now open to everyone to shop. If you have been waiting you can hop on over HERE to shop this sale, but first be sure to check out our post here on our favorite investment buys of the sale.

OK, back to the cabinet! Earlier this summer I started looking for a similar style cabinet (the glass doors, iron hardware, bleached wood) to fit in this awkward area by the door that leads out to our deck. Something like this has been on my wish list since I just planned out the house, I’d tried this iron shelf (a great price, you can find it here) but it just seemed a little too bulky next to the door.

I’d seen the style I wanted at Pier 1, and had tried to get one online when they announced their unfortunate store closing but they sold out quickly. One day, having a spare 30 minutes while my daughter was at ice skating, I popped over to our local store on the off chance they had one left. I hit the jackpot, the salesperson told me they’d had several cabinets shipped in from another store and I had my choice of both a tall and a shorter one. The only drawback was that they were painted green.

I only had a few minutes to decide which one I wanted and I will honestly admit I have such bad buyer’s remorse that I didn’t opt for the taller cabinet. However, that would have been more $$$, involved getting a truck to bring it home and it would have taken up as much visual space as the larger shelf I’d had their previously so I went the smaller (and simpler) route. You can see it in the store above, the green paint isn’t as obvious but it just didn’t look the way I wanted it to.

The cabinet sat in my garage for about a month and I started working on it in my spare time. First I painted over the green paint with Rustoleum White Linen Chalk Paint (I painted it on by hand). The painting part was easy, but then I decided I wanted to tone down the orange stain on the doors and set about sanding…and sanding…and sanding!

It took a combination of my DeWalt Orbital Sander, a Corner Cat Sander and hand sanding to get in all the crevices but I actually love the lighter, more raw wood look on the door fronts. It is a bit more ‘rough’ than my typical style but I starting to become more drawn to what they call the European Farmhouse look. I am not sure how to blend it seamlessly into my craftsman style home other than starting with a few pieces at a time.

Once we got it inside and and styled I loved how it looks in the space. It holds my cookbook collection (which is ever-growing!) and has basket for dog toys and some faux plants etc. One benefit I realized that the medium height is that I was able to hang some family pictures above it.

Our house has great a great layout, but it isn’t overly large so anytime I can add storage (and pretty storage at that) it is great. I am sure as fall gets closer I’ll tweak the decor, and it will be even prettier styled for the holidays.

Since this cabinet isn’t available any longer, I rounded up some similar ones I found online. Most of these you won’t have to do as much sanding and painting either!

Thanks for stopping by~

Great job, Amy! I love how the doors look now even though it was a lot of work. It’s a perfect fit for that space! I’m so sorry about Pier One closing. 😭 It’s been a favorite for years. They always had such unique items and a wonderful selection of dishes, stemware, etc.

Hi Pat–so nice to hear from you! I agree about Pier 1, I always got so many creative ideas from a visit to the store. It is sad how many great stores have closed this year.

I hope you are doing well! Thanks for your kind words.

      XO,
      Amy
