I was in Hobby Lobby the other day, and not only was the fall decor out on the shelves, but they also were starting to stock Christmas decorations–I kid you not!  We haven’t even hit the first official day of summer yet (it’s June 20th, BTW), and I intend to savor every single warm day!

The good news about the way that retail works is that summer clothing is now on sale, so this is the perfect time to pick up a few new pieces at great prices.

First up, all things striped.  I am addicted to stripes, especially striped shorts.  If you don’t have a pair (or two or three) of these, then you need to go buy some ASAP.  They are so versatile, and despite what your mother told you about horizontal stripes making you look fat, they don’t.  I promise.

The black and white striped pair I’m wearing in the picture above is from Gap a few years ago, but this pair is almost identical, and they’re on sale right now for only $19.99.  The same pair is available with yellow stripes, which would be darling paired with a navy top.

I pair these shorts with a denim top (mine is here) and gold belt, but they also work with hot pink, red, yellow and of course black or white.

I added two new summer clutches to my closet this year; this one I just ordered so don’t have it in my hot little hands yet, but isn’t it cute?

Now, more shorts.  I saw these babies in Target the other day and fell in love, but I didn’t buy them because I’m pretty sure the ones in the store have a 3 or 4″ inseam, and I like a 5″ now that I’m over–ahem–forty.  But they do sell the 5″ inseam online, and you can find them {here}. They’re only $19.99, and right now they’ve got a buy one, get one 50% off on women’s shorts, plus free shipping over $25.  Of course, if you’ve got a Red Card, you also get free shipping on any purchase and an additional 5% off.

Last summer, I found these gorgeous yellow, grey, and white shorts and wore them all the time (I still do).  They have a 4″ inseam and a cute tassel waist, and I mostly wore them with this navy top.

Here’s a close up–the fabric is beautiful:

They don’t have the exact same colors this year, but I love both the pink and the teal.  They’re 40% off right now (use code SWEET) so you could buy both pairs, right? 🙂

PS These run large, so size down if you’re in between sizes.  Also, the pink is more pink and less coral in real life; it’s absolutely lovely.

Now, on to a few non-striped items (can you even believe it?).  I have been wearing this outfit easily once a week since I got the palm clutch about six weeks ago–I just love it!  A bright yellow top works with the clutch, too.

These Calvin Klein white capris are a new purchase this year–I had literally worn out my last pair.  Skinny legs don’t look good on me and these are straight-leg capris, so I am thrilled with the fit!  I can roll the legs up and cuff them if I want them to be a bit shorter, but mostly I wear them as-is.  They’re on sale with free shipping right now, too. I’d size down if you’re in between sizes since they stretch out as you wear them.

I love Lilly Pulitzer but these palazzo pants might just be my favorite Lilly item in my closet.  They are so flattering and are perfect for those dressy-casual nights.  I sized up for these and didn’t need to get them hemmed, but I do have to wear them with wedges rather than flip-flops.  If you’re planning a trip to the beach this summer, these would be great evening pants.  Here in North Carolina, we just wear them all the time, though!

My philosophy about clothes has changed over the past few years…I used to buy inexpensive things–and lots of them.  Then I realized that I wear just a few pieces over and over again, so I decide to give half of my closet away and only add something to it when I absolutely love it, so I might only buy three or four things a season.

One more thing…after admiring Tory Burch Miller Sandals on other people, I finally bit the bullet last spring and bought them.  (I usually wear a 7.5 or 8 and bought an 8; they are perfect!)  I wear still them almost every day and they go with everything–they’re the Vintage Vachetta color.  I didn’t buy any other shoes last summer so figured that was worth the rather hefty price tag for a pair of sandals.  If you are on the fence, you will not regret buying them.  They are so comfortable (Tory’s shoes aren’t always that way) and they almost never go on sale, so there’s no reason to wait.

So that’s what I’ll be wearing this summer.  I’ll be back next week with an Italian soda bar I set up after Annabelle’s last performance and a few shots of our never before seen master bathroom.  Have a great weekend, and thanks for stopping by!

  1. I love all of it! You’re so skinny, you can wear anything and make it loo.k good. I don’t think it’s fun to have to change one’s style a bit due to age. 🙂 I’ve had to do quite a bit of that but, IMHO, it’s better than wearing something a 20 yr old would wear. I shouldn’t judge at all but I see women dressing like their high school & college age daughters. Oh well, that’s not my business! You’ve found some great sales. The sandals are so cute…will have to share with my daughter. I can’t wear the flat ones anymore.

I haven’t been to Hobby Lobby or Michael’s lately. You’re right…not even the first day of summer or July 4th and off they go to other seasons and holidays. It’s been so hot and humid here this past week….high 90’s with a heat index of 104-110. Not my cup of tea!

Have a wonderful weekend ~ you’ll look stunning, that’s for sure!

  2. Thanks ladies,
Love the fabric of the shorts with the black or navy top.
I wear short skirts and not shorts, but love your choices.
The handbags are great. (In love with handbags)

  3. Great finds! I need those black and white striped shorts. I’m obsessed with my tb sandals too and wear them almost every day!
