My Favorite Rug Sources

I think we all know that a well-chosen rug can complete a room, but wow–large rugs can be expensive!

I’ve had lots of practice buying rugs over the years, since we move so frequently.  Sometimes a rug that works at one house just won’t fit at another.  Sometimes we have all hardwood floors in our home and need lots of rugs, and sometimes our entire house is carpeted and we put them in storage (or sell them).

There are a few items in my house that I’d never consider selling, but rugs generally aren’t on that list, so when we move, I sell the ones we don’t need any more on Craigslist or a yardsale site, and then I buy new (or new-to-me) ones.

My first source is to find used rugs, either at a local thrift shop or online (Craigslist and online yard sales are my go-to places for buying and selling).  I find some great deals this way, including this lime green and cream rug that was only $35–and it’s 9’x12′!!  It used to live in my office, but now it’s in Kansas in my husband’s bachelor pad.

Affiliate links are included in this post for your convenience.  Your price remains unchanged.

When I’m looking at secondhand rugs, obviously my first criteria is that they be clean and stain-free.  If there are a few small spots, I don’t let that stop me if the price is right and I love the color or pattern.  I have had good luck steaming small spots out of rugs using my HomeRight steam mop (it comes with different attachments for rug cleaning).  I steer clear from rugs that had noticeable odors as those rarely fade, and I always use Skout’s Honor Odor Eliminator on all of our rugs and upholstery, particularly when I bring something new (old) home.  I actually wrote a sponsored post on Skout’s Honor not too long ago; you can read more about their eco and pet-friendly products {here}.

I have several great online sources for new rugs that won’t break the bank; I’ve shopped at each of these and can personally vouch for the quality of the rugs I’ve received.  At all of these sites, returns are free if there’s a defect or damage, and they usually have extensive online reviews so you can read about the feel and quality from other purchasers.

Overstock is one of my favorite online sites to buy rugs.  Their selection is enormous, and shipping is usually free and fast.  I’ve never had to send a rug back, and I’ve probably bought a dozen from them over the years.

This 6′ round jute rug is under $150, shipped:

The 8’x’11’ rug that was in our living room for years was under $400 shipped, which is great for a large wool rug.  Also, if you sign up for Overstock.com emails, they’ll give you a 12% coupon, which really adds up for larger purchases.

Joss and Main is another online site that has a great selection of affordable rugs, and shipping is usually free (currently for orders over $49).  The only drawback with them is that they don’t always restock their inventory, so if you see something you love, buy it before it’s gone!

Amy’s dining room rug was from Joss and Main; they don’t currently have it in their inventory so I’ve linked to two other online sites that carry it below.

Amy’s braided jute rug is huge–9’x12′, but the color and texture are wonderful and the price was right!

As you know, one of the reasons that we love Nordstrom is that they offer free shipping and returns, and crazy good sales throughout the year.  They carry the Dash & Albert rug line, which is probably my favorite as their colors and patterns are always on point, but they’re often a bit too pricey for my budget.  If you’re in the same boat, then this is the time, because they are part of the Anniversary sale (now through August 6th) and the deals are amazing!

Dash & Albert also makes outdoor rugs that I’ll often use indoors as they tend to be less expensive and they hold up well to kids and pets.

Last, but certainly not least, I love to find rugs at “The Mother Ship,” aka HomeGoods.  The prices are their smaller-sized throw rugs can’t be beat.  Also, if you’re looking for faux sheepskin rugs, their price and quality is by far the best I’ve found.

By the way, while most of those faux sheepskin rugs say that they should be spot cleaned only, I throw mine in the washing machine (wash cold, tumble dry on lowest heat setting) and they wash beautifully.

Their area rugs are a great deal, too, and obviously it’s nice to be able to see and feel a rug in person before purchasing it.

As you know, Amy and I love our bargains, so you might enjoy this post on how I find inexpensive formal dresses, this post on how to decorate when you have zero budget, or this post on where to find great inexpensive farmhouse decor.

Enjoy your weekend, and thanks for stopping by!

I have had great luck at Tuesday Morning and Home goods. My current living room rug was purchased at Tuesday Morning for just $240. That is a major steal for an 8×10 wool rug!

Yes, Tuesday Morning is another great local source! You never know what they’re going to have in stock, but their prices can’t be beat. Your rug was definitely a steal!

Great places to shop for rugs. While my smaller dash and albert indoor/outdoor rugs say to spot clean or hose down outside, I have been able to do the same with them as you do the sheepskin rugs and they turn out great. And I too have washed my Ikea sheepskin rug.

My mother always told me that they err on the side of caution with care labels and that most things really can be washed. Once a rug is dirty enough that I’m considering throwing it away, there’s really nothing to lose by tossing it in the washing machine and experimenting!
