I will be honest that I struggle with Memorial Day shopping every year. As the spouse of an Army officer, we are very aware of the sacrifice and loss that surrounds this hallowed day and it’s a time when we remember far too many friends who gave all.
On the other hand, I’m always conscious of our household budget and spending habits. Now more than ever it’s important for us to live within our means, and sale shopping is one of the main ways that I save money for our family.
In the spirit of compromise, I decided to share the Memorial Day sales today (Sunday), but we’ll be taking the day off tomorrow to honor and remember. And below the sale listings, I’ll link to our Memorial Day post from 2015.

your desire to honor America’s heroes really resonated with me. THANK YOU for reminding our self-indulged population. Yesterday I wept while lining our street front with little flags. I have not personally experienced a loss due to service but my dad was an Air Force lifer, brother did 13 yrs and our son in law is retired Navy. A bestie of mine is married to a retired Army Chaplain who pastored our church for 5 yrs and I’ve heard many sad tales. I just lost my mother to the Coronavirus so I wanted to put little black ribbons on every flag for those that died too. For that reason shopping’s appeal has waned for me & we are supporting our son who lost his job due to COVID but also because honestly I’m not going out so new clothes seem silly like trying to sell ice to an eskimo. However since all retail is suffering &offering discounts I did begin shopping for Christmas and birthday gifts. I enjoy getting packages & feel like I’m saving by doing it that way.

Oh, Pamela, first and most importantly, I am so sorry to hear about your mother! What a sad loss!
Thank you for putting out the flags to honor our fallen, and for your family’s long history of service. You certainly “get it” and I appreciate that you understand the balance between remembering those who have given their all and the fact that they would want us to enjoy our families and freedoms that they fought to secure. I think your idea of doing Christmas and birthday shopping ahead of time is a good one; our stores need our support, too, as they employ so many, and of course lots of people aren’t able to make purchases right now (like your son). Thank you for your heartfelt comment and I pray you and yours a peaceful Memorial Day. Take care,Christy
