As promised I am back today with Part 2 of our Fun Fall Fashion post {you can see that HERE if you missed it last week}, today is a little more exciting– I think. These are some ideas for trendy and stylish items that you can add to your wardrobe to make it just a little more fun this season.
As I said in the first post, it can be hard to know what to wear when you fall in that life stage between shopping at Forever 21 and collecting social security, but here are some ideas, hopefully some of them with work for you 🙂 Most of the items I picked go right along with last week’s selections. I try to maintain a closet full of classic basics and add a few new stylish items each season. Since most of the items from last week can be dressed either up or down {like the magic tunic}, they are worth the investment. Here are some fun things you can try this Fall and give your wardrobe an update, all the photos should be linked to the item to make it easier to get the details. {We include affiliate links in our posts, these do not change the price you pay but help support our blog}.
1–Add a Vest There are so many styles and options but a vest is a great way to take a plain shirt to a fashionable level. This year the utility vest is still in style, and a great way to dress up a plaid shirt and jeans. This is a bit of a boho {bohemian 🙂 } item but I like the not-so-serious look of a utility vest and the best part about olive is that it goes great with denim. Another lower priced option is HERE.

2—Mules Oh gosh, these are everywhere this fall and I am in serious LOVE! Rumor has it you can get these at Marshalls, though I haven’t been so lucky {#stalking} but this style of shoe is just the cutest. I love that these are a little dressy, but yet are flat so they are great for wearing when you are walking far enough that heels don’t make sense. I adore this pair below, I think they have so much versatility they are worth the investment–they are perfect for every day, but would also carry you through the coming holidays. 3–Plaid Top This one is so much fun to me, nothing says fall more than a plaid flannel shirt right? There are so many patterns, you can often find inexpensive ones on Jane.com or I have this one {below} in blue, it is so soft and has a super long back so I even feel comfortable wearing it with leggings. Pair with a vest (above), or a casual cardigan and you’ll be on point this fall!

As much as I love wearing a casual plaid shirt, I also wanted to show you a dressy one. I snatched this cute top up knowing I’d wear it both now and over the holidays, I can see it at Thanksgiving or at a Christmas concert with capri pants {though I wouldn’t tuck it in} and yes, of course I’d pair it with those mules above. Isn’t it darling? (EDIT: This blouse is 50% off right now with free shipping use code SURPRISE)
Here is yet another option that could be dressed up or down, you could pair this plaid shirt with pearls for a very stylish but not too serious look, or wear it under a vest with jeans for a very casual outfit. It’s 30% off right now too (use code: SHOPFAST), this one is definitely a classic that won’t go out of style.
4–Sweater Vest I am seeing more and more of these on fashionistas on instagram, so they must be a thing. I think long sweater/cardigan vests are more comfortable than a bulky sweater. I have one I have worn for years, these are sort of a fresh take for this season on the classic cardigan. This one below would also be fun to dress up {statement necklace, black pants, leopard flats} or dress down {jeans, scarf and boots} so this sweater would give you plenty of different options this Fall.(EDIT: This sweater is 50% off right now with free shipping use code SURPRISE)
5–Tunic Top Last week I showed you the basic tunic but this year there are all sorts of colorful, flowy Fall tops out there. These are just dressy tops that can be worn with dress pants for work, but also go well with jeans. Some of my favorites are HERE, HERE and HERE (featured in the images below, click them for more info).
6–Bell Sleeve Tops & Sweaters This is definitely the year of the fun sleeve, isn’t it? Everyone is wearing these flowing sleeves, in dresses and tops alike. I have several tops with the bell sleeves, and I usually just pair them with jeans. I am absolutely mad about this cream colored one I just picked up, it’s so soft and fits so nicely {I popped it on to take the picture for you, but I would skip the white tank top underneath in real life and go with a nude base garment 🙂 } It’s like a thick tee shirt and the sleeves are just too fun, this day I paired it with cargo pants. Wear this look with distressed jeans to tone down the fru-fru sleeves, or dress it up with black pants and heels to go out. Fun and versatile. (EDIT: These tops are 50% off right now with free shipping use code SURPRISE)
Here is the store photo for another view:
PS While not exclusively fall, this top is on sale (finally!) and is a great basic, especially for those of you in warmer areas. It comes in black and pink, both would be perfect with jeans or nice under a cardigan. I keep thinking the pink would be so pretty under the sweater below with some leopard flats!
Here is a pretty sweater version of the bell sleeve style in a cardigan sweater, and this comes in tons of colors.
7–Leather or Suede Moto Jacket This may be a little far reaching for some of you, but I truly believe a really cool leather jacket NEVER goes out of style. Nowadays they have so many ‘faux’ leather jackets that they don’t cost a fortune, making it easier to jump on this trend-wagon. I really love the gray suede on this one, it’s a little less edgy than a black motorcycle jacket but still perfect for date night or girls night out. It would be hard not to have a good time in this suede jacket like this, I think 🙂
Here is another one that caught my eye, it is even a little less edgy and at a lower price point. It has a pretty draped front and comes in several colors too.
8–Camisole This is another fun one, and I am excited about it 🙂 These were a popular look this summer and now they are being worn under sweaters for Fall. I searched around for one that was reasonably priced and would go with most of the dressier sweaters in my closet {I purchased this one, it’s currently 40% off}, and there are also some dressier ones I considered HERE and HERE. Again, this is a trendy but still a nice investment type piece. Add a pretty necklace and heels with a cardigan and you are all dressed up, or style it down for a girls lunch with a bulkier cardigan and boots. I love the casual elegance these add to an outfit, and so much more current looking than just a t-shirt. (EDIT: This cami is 50% off right now with free shipping use code SURPRISE)
9–Poncho sweaters I absolutely love the soft gray color of this sweater below. Let’s be real, ponchos hide a multitude of sins, they are warm, cozy and comfortable and– hooray!– are very in style this year. Just pair a flowy poncho with leggings {make sure it’s long enough or wear a long t-shirt/tank underneath} and boots. Keep in mind that the oversized top looks great with a fitted bottom, so either leggings or skinny jeans work nicely. For an evening look, just add dress pants and heels.
10–Booties or Over the Knee Boots Last week I talked about booties (ankle height boots), though they probably cross over to be a trend item too. There are so many cute styles to choose from, the laser cut ones are fun especially during Fall {before snow is on the ground, right?}. For an even bolder look, the over the knee boot style is everywhere and it makes your legs look longer and again, works great paired with fitted pants and a longer top. I purchased these gray suede boots below during the Nordstrom Sale and they are pretty fun, some other options are HERE and HERE.
11–Plaid Wrap Top This wrap top is a fun look for those of you who don’t like things too fitted, and want to be covered up. Similar to the poncho, there is something dramatic about throwing a plaid wrap on in the Fall. What is nice about a wrap is again, it works on all different body types, and these work perfectly with jeans and boots and can be layered over light sweaters for cooler nights.
12–Cross Body/Saddle Bag I keep seeing cute suede saddle style and cross body bags paired with cozy cardigans so I thought I’d wrap up with this item. It seems like all week long I run around with my larger bag to hold all the things, but when you are just going out for dinner or a party, it’s nice to just bring a few essentials. I really, really love this bag below, {maybe because it matches my boots?!) but less expensive options are HERE and HERE.
OK, did you see anything that looked fun to you? I’d love to hear your thoughts. I think it’s important as we grow older to feel comfortable but also confident in how we look. I know it can be confusing to figure out what to wear once we hit a certain age, not to mention it is hard to step outside our comfort zone to wear something on the trendy side. I also think it’s empowering, so I hope you give some of these new looks a try!
