I share over on my wellness website ways to have less toxic life, and that includes the homes we live in. Over the years I have decreased the chemical cleaners in favor of safer, healthier options. I thought I’d share some of the best non-toxic ways I clean my home today. Just in time to give your home a spring refresh!
The very top of the list is the Force of Nature cleaning solution. I did a whole post about that here, and (while that post was sponsored, it was only after I reached out to the company to tell them what a great product I thought it was that they offered us a collaborative piece). I use this mixture daily to clean most of the surfaces in our home. We’ve been housebreaking a puppy as those of you who follow us on Instagram know, her name is Penny. She’s another King Charles Cavalier and she’s adorable, but with a puppy comes a mess. I have gone through bottles of the Force of Nature these last few weeks. Once you buy the diffuser, the solution cartridges aren’t expensive. If you didn’t read the post, this is a completely non-toxic solution that kills germs and bacteria, and it’s safe for almost every surface.
Another tool that I bought on a whim after seeing it on social media but now can’t live without it, is this Shark Handheld Vacuum. It’s useful for everything from cleaning the crumbs out of drawers, dirt out of my car or the dog hair from under the fridge. I reach for this constantly, it’s very powerful for a small tool. It’s easy to empty the cansister too, it’s just something that makes life easier.
These EcoSheets laundry detergent sheets came very highly recommended. Not only are they cost-effective but they aren’t full of chemicals, which laundry detergent typically is not. I know that sounds like a contradiction, but washing your clothes in chemical solvents may actually be more harmful than beneficial. While I use natural detergents, I find they are expensive and they sometimes don’t clean as well as their more toxic mainstream counterparts. These sheets seem to do the trick, plus no large jug to heft or dispose of.
There are so many new and amazing cleaning tools that make life easier, I am always sucked into the internet cleaning videos that make it look so easy. There are many motorized scrub brushes available now, and most of them are not too costly. They make scrubbing a tub or shower simple, no bending over or reaching. I use a smaller version like this one for tasks such as cleaning the top of my range, around my faucets and drains, for grout lines and to clean the crevices between appliances and the counters.
If you prefer to just use a standard (non-powered) scrub brush, these long handled ones make it easy to clean a tub or shower, again without bending. They also make it easy to clean your baseboards.
Another cleaning tool I use all the time is the Bissel Little Green Machine. It has replaced my bulky carpet cleaner (especially for pet messes), it’s easier to tote around. I also use it too clean stains off my furniture and in my car. It’s really very useful, and it empties quickly too.
I included these washable cleaning cloths, they are more cost-efficient than paper towels and they work well on surfaces like appliances. They can be tossed into the washing machine instead of the trash and reused as needed.
Finally, these are probably not technically “clean” as they are made by Clorox and therefore they have a chemical cleaning solution, but when it comes to toilets I have a higher tolerance for an easy to use product. This cleaning wand with disposable cleaning sponges just make cleaning a toilet so much easier, and sometimes I think that is worth it!
One more idea to share that has been very popular, this post shares how to make your own cleaning solutions using essential oils and other ingredients you probably have around your home. You can find the recipe for each different household cleaner on the printable labels.
