My sweet friend, Ashly, has been gracious enough to let me photograph her home to show you several times in the past, and her Christmas tour is always one of my favorite parts of the season (see her previous posts here). When her family recently added a bonus/playroom upstairs, I knew I was going to have to show it to you because it turned out perfectly.
The entire upstairs of their home was unfinished but there was definitely room to add additional space. The first challenge was figuring out where to add the steps; Ashly and her contractor decided to put them inside and the doorway is in their dining room.
At the top of the steps there are three doors; a coat closet, a sliding barn door to the right that’s the entrance to the playroom, and then on the left is the door to Ashly’s decorating “closet” under the eaves.
I have to say that impressed with how tidy and organized this space is (also maybe a little jealous because I haven’t had this much storage space in several houses!).
But I digress. Here’s the sliding barn door to the bonus room:
As you enter the room, to the left there are these great built-in bunks that sleep three (there’s a trundle bed under the lower bunk), perfect for sleepovers or holidays.
Aren’t the steps up the side the cutest?
As is typical in Ashly’s house, every detail is perfect.
Just to the right of the bunks is a small set of built in shelves where her son has a few LEGO masterpieces on display.
The cabinet below holds a supply of snack items so no one has to walk all the way down to the kitchen.
On the opposite wall is the cutest little retro mini-fridge; isn’t it adorable? It would be perfect in a dorm room, too.
The heart of the room is a sectional sofa that Ashly found on Craigslist; she always has super luck when it comes to scoring great finds online!
She also sewed the pillows herself.
I’m going to share the closeups I took of all of her beautiful bookcase vignettes in a second post because there are so many of them and she’s got a great eye for styling shelves.
The full bathroom is an added bonus and makes this a fully functional guest suite.
I love the marble mini hexagonal tile on the floor:
Ashly even makes the shower stall look pretty:
And under the sink:
Wouldn’t you love to stay in this room as a guest? I know I would!
Ashly, thanks for sharing your home with us yet again–this might be my new favorite room in your house! I’ll be back with Part 2 and how Ashly styles a perfect bookshelf in my next post.
Thanks for stopping by!

Wow! So cool. Thanks for sharing this. During quarantine times, I am enjoying tours of other places/homes even more than usual. It’s like a mini vacation.
