Velvet Covered Bergere Chair

Remember when I scored this great bergere chair for $20 at the thrift shop?  I love the sassy shape and French lines of bergere chairs, but obviously this girl was going to need new fabric!

I went back and forth over whether or not I wanted to go with a solid or a print, but as long as my husband stays in the military, we will continue to move every few years, and that means that neutral furniture works better.

I’d been eyeing these two chairs for months.  I love the contrast of the dark wood with the light colored fabric, but if you’ve priced bergere chairs then you know that they’re usually over $500, and these two are no exception.

I usually head over to Online Fabric Store when I need upholstery fabric at a good price; they were the ones who provided the aqua and white fabric for my daughter’s loveseat:

They also were my source for this fun dalmatian print faux fur that I used on my upcycled cane bench:

After more hours than I care to count of poring over fabric selections, I chose this Bella Velvet in Pearl {here}, although Buckwheat, Grey, and Storm were close runners-up.  I needed five yards for this chair, the two cushions, and all the cording, by the way.

Because we were about to head over to Spain and then come home and jump right into our move, I took the easy way out and dropped this off at the upholstery shop, and let me tell you, at only $200, it was worth every single penny!

I didn’t do anything to the frame, just polished the wood.

The velvet is a low-pile polyester, and so soft. The upholsterer said it was a dream to work with.

You can see that we’ve been making progress at the MCC house, and Harley is relaxed enough in his new surroundings that he’s gone back to his status quo: sleeping 23 hours a day!

The living room is going to get a new couch (more on that soon), and I think I’m going to have the black velvet painted chair reupholstered in this same fabric because I’m so pleased with it!

It looks great! How did you polish the wood on the chair? I have a chair that I need to redo but I am lost on how to refresh the wood. Thanks!

      Hey, Catherine–

The wood was in pretty good shape, so I just used some Method “Wood for Good” furniture polish. It’s almond oil-based and smells heavenly. You could probably use furniture wax if yours needs a little more TLC.

      Hope that helps!

Love that chair. It is gorgeous and the MCC house looks like it is coming together beautifully.

Thanks so much, Marty! I’m actually really enjoying living in a small house, and I am beyond grateful that the move is over. I know you can relate!
