This week went fast, I think this series is going to be a whirlwind! Essentially, I am attempting a complete room makeover in 6 weeks along with all the other participants in the “challenge”– this is excellent motivation! Here is installment number 2 in my endeavor to create and office/workspace in the sitting room in our master bedroom by early November.
I purchased this campaign-style console at a local estate sale a few weeks ago. I have been looking for a large storage piece for my office, something to hold paper, files, office supplies and the like. In my last office {See it HERE} I had the large Billy bookcases but those are being used for another project so I needed some new storage. While I like the look of the open shelves, I thought it would be a nice change to have something where I can hide everything inside, have some drawers, and still have a flat surface on the top. When I spied this Drexel console for sale with its mid-century looking hardware, I snatched it up!
After spraying it with a white gloss paint–something that was a breeze with my HomeRight FinishMax Pro–and refreshing the hardware with some Rust-Oleum Metallic Gold Spray Paint
and Rub ‘n Buff on the corner pieces, it now has a new life.
I will be back to share all about the inside storage and the desktop accessories but for now, I am enjoying it in its new finished splendor. I love the gold, and I really love the white gloss finish. It’s hard to roll gloss paint on and not get brush strokes, so the sprayer was the key to this coming out with a smooth surface. I still may add a coat of polyurethane, though I am afraid of yellowing the white, so we’ll see about that.
This piece has not yet been moved into its final spot in my office space. I photographed it in my family room as I probably will have the office painted in the next few weeks so there isn’t any sense in moving it yet. I purchased several large pieces at the Estate Sale {you have seen them on Facebook or Instagram if you follow us there} so we’re going to have to bite the bullet and pay some strong movers to get the new furniture up the stairs. This was definitely something I didn’t consider when purchasing three large new-to-me pieces of furniture, but with a new house to fill, I still saved money over buying new and I love the retro charm of finding estate pieces.
I decorated it with some of the accessories I already have for the new office space. I just can’t get away from the gold trend, and I figured why fight it when it goes so nicely with the existing hardware on the console?
I will touch more on the accessories in my next One Room Challenge update. Yes, I spray painted my stapler gold {Heather and I have been thinking alike!}, while I did in fact purchase a gold one when they first came out in Target, I had one of those “what am I thinking?” moments and returned it–$15 for a gold stapler? A little spray paint did essentially the same thing for pennies and I won’t feel guilty retiring it when the gold trend is history 🙂
As far as the rest of the room makeover, the sticking point is evidently going to be the drapes. It would seem that the drapes I picked in my inspiration photo are not to be found anywhere, despite my best efforts. I have selected a “plan B” and am waiting for those to come back in stock, hopefully I will hear more next week. Since the windows in this space are the windows for my bedroom, I need something that will darken the room and with six large windows (three across each wall) that can get to be an expensive proposition. I am crossing my fingers that the new ones come back in stock. We currently have paper blinds on the windows–cringe–so this is a much needed and long overdue improvement.
I still have to work on the shelving for the room but I have a plan in mind for those so with this major piece of furniture done I feel like I am on track thus far. Be sure to see what everyone else is up to with their challenge rooms over at Calling it Home.
Thanks for stopping by and be sure to check back next Thursday for the week 3 “office challenge” update!
