Home Cleaning + Disinfecting During the Winter

HEY! Before we jump into all things holiday I wanted to spend today, Monday, being practical and talk about cleaning and killing germs. Let’s be honest, right now it is really important to be able to sanitize our homes.

For years we have been singing the praises of steam cleaners, they have so many uses for your home and even for your car. I use my Power Steamer almost daily. I plug it in to heat up when I start my dishes after dinner, and once everything is put away I give the counters and appliances a quick blast of steam.

Of course, there are so many uses for this machine in addition to cleaning your kitchen. Like removing wallpaper, cleaning your car and it makes it simple to clean your oven. It comes with an attachment that makes steam cleaning your floors easy, so you don’t need a separate floor cleaning machine. You can even steam clothes and drapes with another attachment, so no more ironing. It is also a huge time saver in the bathroom, I use it clean tile, grout, the sink fixtures and even my glass shower doors.

I use my Power Steamer pretty much every night right now, and certainly find myself reaching for it constantly when one of us is sick. My kids have both contracted viruses (not Covid, thankfully) even with masks and virtual schooling this fall, but both times they haven’t passed it to anyone else. I use the high temperature steam daily in their shared bathroom to kill germs, so far I think it has been successful.

In the evening, as I mentioned, I plug it in and it takes less than 10 minutes to heat up while I do the dishes. Then just before I finish up our kitchen I blast all our counters and appliances–especially the handles– and even our trash cans.

It takes just a few seconds and everything is clean and disinfected. I follow up with a quick wipe with a microfiber rag for any residue, though for the most part the steam dissipates almost immediately because of the high-temperature.

There was a time when I was using a disinfecting spray on my counters but when I finally took a few minutes to read the instructions on the label I found that it had to sit on the surface for ten minutes to actually kill germs. I was so surprised, who has time for that? I went right back to using steam cleaning on all my surfaces.
