We have been using our backyard Fire Pit quite a bit this summer. We just have a simple set up in our yard (you can see how we easily DIY’d our backyard Fire Pit here) but there is something about summer nights that makes having a fire in the evening seem special. Our kids always think it is tons of fun.
Last year we hosted all their friends for a s’mores party, but this summer I have been simplifying life even more and having the kids make their own foil-wrapped desserts. No need for long sticks and gooey marshmallows! My kids think that this new way is even more fun, and as a mom, I get extra points because this dessert even involves fruit. Ok, the fruit is filled with chocolate and marshmallows, so they probably deduct some mom points for that!
I simply set out a large bunch of bananas and some aluminum foil. Then the kids can fill the banana with whatever they like–chocolate chips, small graham crackers, and marshmallows seem to be the most popular, though I prefer butterscotch chips in mine 🙂
Lighting the firepit is so easy, we love our HomeRight ElectroLight Starter. You simply plug it in, and the super hot air quickly lights whatever kindling you have. Then it fans the flames to get a fire started, it seriously takes a few seconds to get a fire going. The best part is there are no chemicals, no toxic lighter fluid and fumes that gets mixed in with the food my kids are about to eat! Also, we get to give one of these away so scroll down to enter to win!
I used to have to rely on my husband to be the chief fire-starter in our home, but now with the Electrolight I feel totally comfortable getting our firepit going, even with kids around. Sidenote: I have even given my Dad and my brother these as gifts–they are the perfect guy gift for anyone but especially for the ‘grill masters’ in your life!
To make this dessert, just slice open a banana (make sure to leave the peel on) and stuff with whatever fillings you like. Then wrap the stuffed bananas tightly in foil and stick in them down in the fire. After a few minutes, everything melts together and the bananas soften–they are so yummy! Another benefit is that you can just ball up the foil and toss when done so clean up is simple.
You can use anything you like to “stuff” the banana…we use chocolate chips, marshmallow, teddy bear shaped graham crackers, but Peanut Butter Cups, M&M’s or a drizzle of chocolate syrup or caramel topping would also be delicious. It is always fun to see what the kids come up with, and they like that they get to make their own just how they want it.
These are definitely the times that memories are made of, now we just need to figure out how to make summer last a little longer so we can have more nights like this 🙂
Now the fun part! You can enter to win an ElectroLight FireStarter, simply follow the instructions on the widget below. Good luck everyone!

Oh my, they sound delicious. I am praying the next time I do my food sensitivity test that bananas have come off the no list! But not holding my breath as they have appeared for four years now ;-(

I recall you posting on this product before and thought great idea, but I had no need for such thing. However a few weeks ago I drug my son out of his summer slumber and had him help me build our own fire pit. Now I’ll have to put it on my wish list!

We just got a fire pit this summer but it has been so hot, we haven’t even put it together yet. I am useless at starting fires so this would be perfect for me. Thanks.

I would love to win one of these starters to give my husband. We have a fire pit that we enjoy with friends & neighbors, and when our young-adult kids come home to visit. There’s something about sitting around a fire that prompts great conversation… Your dessert looks So yummy-we’ll have to try it (after we finish our whole 30 diet!)
