I thought I’d take a quick break today from the series of posts I’ve been writing on our trip to Spain to show you our new couch.

When we downsized from 4000sf to 1600sf, a lot of our furniture had to go into storage.  We had already decided that after nearly 20 years, our slipcovered sofa and chair needed to be replaced.  Even with photo editing, you can see that the slipcovers weren’t quite white anymore, and the cushions had lost their pouf:

For the short term, these two pieces will go on the truck with my husband and he’ll use them in his apartment in Kansas, then we’ll donate them (if anyone will take them!) when we get to live together again.

In the meantime, our small living room at the MCC House has presented a bit of a decorating challenge.  While I love the coziness of the small space, oversized furniture doesn’t work in here!  I’ve been looking for a new sofa for months–seriously–wanting to find one that would work with our existing decor and would also fit in the smaller living room.  I also wanted a full-size sofa (not a loveseat) that will also be able to hold its own if we move back to a less Lilliputian-sized home in the future.

The Jessica sofa from the Home Decorators Collection at Home Depot fit all of those requirements:

The linen fabric is a perfect match for my husband’s recliner and the bergere chair I had recovered.  Even though the recliner is going to Kansas with my husband in a few weeks, at some point all the pieces will be reunited, just like the rest of our family. 🙂

The nailhead trim on the sofa is darker (the recliner’s is silver), which I actually prefer, but I think you only notice it when the two are right next to each other.

Full disclosure:  the folks at Home Decorators Collection gave me this sofa in exchange for my honest review of the product and ordering process.  So here’s what you need to know about ordering furniture online from HDC.

The list price of this sofa is $999, but they do run frequent sales and you can use your online coupons for Home Depot.  When I ordered mine, they were offering free shipping.

I ordered it on May 9th and they delivered it on the 17th; since it comes via freight delivery, I thought that was a pretty good turnaround.  They called me several days beforehand to confirm my address, and then the day before and day of delivery to ensure I’d be home.

Two guys carried it up to my front porch in a HUGE box, and all my son and I had to do was take it into the living room and screw on the legs.  I love the caster wheels on the legs!

The sofa itself is big enough for three people (it’s 77″ wide), but doesn’t overpower my small living room.  The seat cushion is removable but is secured in place with little straps.

It’s comfortable, but definitely not as squishy as our last sofa.  That’s okay, though, since I wanted a more tailored look this time around, and I got it.

While it wouldn’t have been fun to load this up and take it back to Home Depot, you can return large furniture items like this to the store, which is a nice “insurance policy.”  I’m definitely keeping this, though!

We still use the black tufted bench as a coffee table/footrest:

I like all of my coffee table books on the tray, but my son and his friends clear that off when they’re over and put snacks and drinks on it instead.

Because we’ve had a slipcovered sofa for years, and I could just unzip the covers and wash them, I’m planning to scotchguard the new couch.  Our kids are 16 and 13 now and don’t spill as often as they used to, but accidents will happen, and scotchguard is one of this mama’s very best friends!

Here’s the source list for the living room– let me know if I missed anything.
