If you follow us on Facebook, then you might have seen the peppermint sugar scrubs my daughter and I made at Christmastime.  We gave them to her ballet teachers, and she and her friends made them at a sleepover, too.

Everyone enjoyed them so much that I decided to make a new batch this spring, using lavender instead of peppermint.  Plus, a good friend has a birthday this week and I wanted to give her something special.

I’ll be sharing the labels for both with you, as well as my sources for the jars and scoops.

The recipe is a snap:  three ingredients only.  Five ingredients and less is kind of my baseline for recipes; the simpler the better!  For this, you’ll just need coconut oil, sugar, and the essential oil of your choice.  And yes, you can substitute kosher salt for sugar if you’d like.

Here it is:

You’ll need the coconut oil to be liquid when you combine it with the sugar so it will pour nicely into your jars, so you might need to microwave it for a few seconds.  It will then harden again as it sits at room temperature.  You also might need to add a bit more sugar if you find that you have a layer of oil at the top after it settles.

I like to include small silver spoons when I have them–I can usually find them at thrift shops or antique stores for a few dollars.

If I don’t have any on hand, then these little wooden scoops are absolutely darling tied to the jars, and you get 10 for less than $8.

For the jars, I have a few sources.  The easiest is to wash out and save glass candle jars that have screw top lids.  Mrs. Meyer’s candles are the cutest, but any others will work.

I also buy these cute hexagonal jars from Amazon; they’re only 4 oz. each.  I use them for  jam, mustard, and lots of other goodies.  These wide-mouthed 8 oz. Ball jars are great, too {they’re here online but you can probably find them cheaper locally}.

And Hobby Lobby has a great selection, too–be sure to buy them when they’re 50% off.

Here are the labels for the lavender scrub; I have two sizes.  {These} print out 12 per sheet and are 2″ wide; you can use them with Avery 22807 labels {available here}.

And {these} print out 9 to a page and are 2.5″ wide; they work perfectly with Avery 22830 labels, available {here}.

Of course, a coordinating ribbon finishes the gift off perfectly.

The peppermint labels are sized to fit on Avery 22830 and are {here}.  It’s not too early to plan for Christmas, right? 😉

  3. My friend had her kindergarten students make these for mother’s day gifts last year. I have one of the leftovers and have greatly enjoyed using it. I’m planning to make some for girlfriend getaway weekend gift bags.

    • That’s so nice to hear–thanks for writing to tell me! Lemon and lavender together are amazing if you decide to experiment a little.
      Take care–
