Over the last few years, HGTV’s Fixer Upper stars Joanna and Chip Gaines have taken the design world by storm. They are talented, funny, down-to-earth and most importantly, they are showing the world that you can take something old and unloved and with a little time, effort and less money than you may think, make it beautiful again.

My favorite part of Joanna’s design aesthetic is how approachable and comfortable it is. While it may not be the simplest thing to shiplap every wall of your house {thought she has us all wishing we could, I know!}, emulating her style is much easier and more affordable than copying a high-end, ‘House Beautiful’ home. Not only does she repurpose everyday things, she uses thrifted finds and vintage decor to make a home not just pretty but also feel personal, lived-in and comfortable.

Today I have pulled together some of my favorite Fixer Upper looks and broken them down to make them easy to copy for your own home. Rarely do any of us start a room with a completely clean slate and a large decor budget, so these are simple ways to integrate the same look and feel as a Fixer Upper home just for MUCH LESS :). Many of the items they use are available through their store, Magnolia Market, so that is also a great place to pick up these home accents!

Starting with this neutral dining room above, this would be an easy look to add to your home. The gray walls above the wainscoting look to be painted in a color such as Revere Pewter. A simple white kitchen table is an easy Goodwill find, just update it with a few new coats of white paint.  The wood treatment on the ceiling adds interest, you could get the same look with beadboard wallpaper.

The key to this pretty living room is the focal point light fixture, the built-in bookcases and the comfortable white furniture. You can copy this look by adding stand-alone bookcases on either side of a fireplace {these below are a steal and really cool looking!}, some white slipcovered furniture–even the IKEA Ektorp line would work–and simple pale blue/ gray walls {a paint color like SW Rhinestone is perfect}.

This girls’ room from their bed & breakfast completely has my heart. I wish my daughter approved of “gray” {she likes “teal” these days, I am hoping that will pass quickly 🙂 } if she would let me I’d copy this detail by detail! I found the sources in case she ever changes her mind, though I think this look would be lovely in a guest room too.  For a close match to this paint color, I would go with SW Comfort Gray.

The Fixer Upper kitchens never disappoint and adding this style to your kitchen wouldn’t be hard. Some spray paint can easily make inexpensive Tolix-style barstools black, and it is simple to add some vintage silver platters to the wall {see how to hang them easily here}.

Finally, this bedroom is so pretty! I just saw this bed is part of the Gaines’ new furniture line, you can see it here , it’s just gorgeous. The shiplap walls are so fabulous, much of the charm of this room comes from the details.

I am inspired to make some major farmhouse updates in my home…or move to a ranch in Texas, I am not sure which 🙂  What is your favorite part? Let me know if I missed any of your favorite rooms!

I think you should move to Texas! 🙂 They’re just about 2 hours from me. I love everything about them and Joanna’s style is amazing! Thank you for sharing all the resources with us. I didn’t see a photo of the kitchen but that’s ok.
You did a ton of research for us!

My only problem with her designs is all the light colored fabric. Not very practical for kids and pets. Beautiful but not practical

May I throw in my two cents? As darling as the suspended with a rope “end tables” are, they aren’t the best idea from a safety standpoint. I did that years ago… ahem… and yes, had a most darling setup that included a candle…. that caught the rope on fire. And they swing…. and so do kids and pets…. the mess was surreal…. the ceiling… wellllllll….. that was a mess too. Just being real….

Sounds like that was a DIY gone bad, I hope nobody got hurt. Thanks for sharing! I love how Joanna Gaines designed this room, but I agree that a better storage option might be more practical. I still think as an inspiration photo it is lovely. XO, Amy

Maybe using chains to suspend it would have been better!
