Today we’re back with our monthly “Day in the Life” post, part of our year long series where we are sharing our tricks for organizing our days, lives, and families and the topic this month is about our Sunday routines. Once I started spending time on Sunday getting organized for the week ahead, I couldn’t help but feel like our weeks flowed more smoothly. Though what matters, I find, is setting aside the time to organize and plan ahead for the week so if you can’t do it on Sunday, Monday works too! I already wrote a post along these lines two years ago here, but today I updated it with the things I am currently doing on Sundays to prepare for the coming week.
I believe wholeheartedly in the biblical principle of rest, and that Sunday was designed to be the break that we all need. It is hard, especially with jobs, and kids to not fill Sunday running around but I know I always feel better when I give myself a break. With that being said, does that mean I don’t do laundry on Sunday? Well, I try not to but sometimes I do, in the end I find that having some downtime at home, even if it includes laundry, is good for the soul 🙂
Obviously, our day starts on Sunday with going to church, we are so blessed by the church community we are in {we attend a local non-denominational church, if you don’t have a church you can listen online to ours here. We have campuses in both California and Virginia, so plenty of room for anyone in between! 🙂 } Anyway, we make it a priority to start our week giving the first hours to God.
When we get home from church, I find that there is always a whole bunch of stuff to knock out like making lunch and finishing the dishes we missed racing out the door, and just spending a few minutes getting things organized and of course, changing into super comfy clothes. After that, I usually crash on the couch! My husband is usually around watching a game in the living room, and our kids are coming and going throughout the day doing their thing. We have a weekly newsletter with bonus content we send out every Sunday so if it’s my week to do that I’ll finish that up (I try to prep it ahead so I am not rushed on Sunday), then I usually just catch up on other blogs or read and just relax.
Sometimes my daughter and I will spend time together in the afternoon if there is something she wants to do. Later in the afternoon, I take some time to meal plan for our week. I have covered my whole system in this previous Day in the Life post HERE. So on Sundays I try to spend some time looking for new recipes (that is something I enjoy) and planning what we are going to eat for dinner for the week. You can follow my Pinterest board with dinner recipes I plan to try HERE.
After I set up our weekly meal plan, I make a shopping list and usually set up an online grocery order. Right now I am in the habit of placing that Sunday night and picking up our groceries on Monday morning while I run errands, this seems to work out well. I love that with online shopping my lists are stored and I can just quickly click what I need to restock, it’s so helpful in not forgetting essentials.
I try to have a real Sunday dinner with all of us on Sunday evenings, which doesn’t always happen with my kids’ schedules but we make the attempt. Sometimes my daughter and I will cook something, she’s into making desserts right now, and I’ll prep dinner. The only disadvantage to not having our groceries arrive until Monday is that it is hard to meal prep ahead Sunday afternoons, which is something that can definitely help weeknight dinners go more smoothly. I am able right now to fit that in Monday afternoons as our schedule currently accommodates it, though most nights I admit I just make everything at that time with no advance prepping involved.
After dinner on Sunday nights we spend some time preparing for Monday morning. My husband and I do dishes, make the lunches for school the next day, and I go through my daughter’s backpack in case I missed anything from her teacher. Our kids help with all this, take out the trash, cleaning up the kitchen etc. This isn’t just Sunday nights, we try to do this nightly so that our mornings go better, but Sundays I try to be extra sure things are squared away. Monday mornings are hard enough!
I am pretty much always in bed early, then I do whatever I feel like– checking in (and usually posting something) on Instagram, reading (I have Kindle Unlimited so I always have a book on hand to read) or browsing Pinterest before bed. I sometimes watch a show but not too often, this week I have been watching “Cheer” on Netflix which I have to say is really good and not at all what you would expect. Anyone else watching it? I am not a night owl, especially on Sundays, our days end pretty early.
That’s our day, it isn’t exciting but it is nice to have a part of the week with downtime built in. Like everyone we have weekends when that doesn’t happen but when it does, I always feel like the week ahead goes more smoothly.

The photos don’t load for me at least half the time since you went to the new format. Anyway I can fix that?

I enjoyed reading about your Sunday routine- it’s always interesting to learn how someone else manages in ‘real life’ and I picked up a few tips from you! I’m going to try the weekly menu plan/grocery pick up on Mondays…. excellent idea!
