Crushing on My Blue Velvet Chair

If you follow us on Facebook, then you might remember that a few days ago I gave you a heads-up that one of my chairs was getting another makeover.  It was finished on Friday, so today I’m showing it off!

I found this mid-century sweetie at the Salvation Army thrift shop in Savannah, about four years ago.  It’s the perfect size for me and is so comfortable, but I wasn’t a fan of the original harvest gold velvet.

This was a few months after I’d had great success painting the fabric of a bergere chair (read more about that project here), and I was impressed at how inexpensive that option was compared to reupholstery.

I’d never painted velvet before, but I’m always game for an experiment.  Besides, worst case scenario I’d be reupholstering the chair anyway, so I figured I might as well try it first.  You can see the details of how I painted it black in this post, and here’s how it turned out:

Fast-forward to a few months ago, and the black has faded a bit (I told you that I love this chair and sit on it often, despite the fact that it’s a bit crispy!).  I knew it was time to bite the bullet and get it recovered, and wrote about my plans for the chair in {this} post.

While I can reupholster, I’ve decided that it’s well worth it to pay someone else to do it.  Fortunately, we have a great upholstery workshop in town and they waved their magic wand over my chair.

I chose this navy blue velvet from Online Fabric Store.

If you saw my $20 thrift store bergere chair project (not the painted one, another one!), then that was the same velvet from OFS, just a different color (the chair below is the pearl color).

It’s worn so well that I decided to use it again.  My son even dropped a piece of pizza–face down, of course–on the bergere chair and it cleaned beautifully.  I do Scotchguard all of my upholstery because we have kids and pets, but even I was impressed with how nicely it cleaned up!

Now I’m just going to share all the pretty pictures of my “new” chair and the gorgeous detailing of the upholstery.

 

 

 

 

I had contemplated adding gold nail head trim, but after I painted the legs gold, I felt like that was enough.

 

 

 

 

I’m thrilled with how it turned out!  I’m going to add a leopard lumbar pillow for fall, even though I love my little pagoda pillow, but other than that, this little corner of the MCC House is complete!
