Blue and White Plates on the Living Room Wall

My little living room is so cozy, except for that tricky big wall behind the sofa. When I wrote this post about our new small-scale sofa, I didn’t have anything on the wall because I just couldn’t figure out what I wanted.

Before:

The first thing I added was this sweet piece of artwork that my mother-in-law passed down to us almost twenty years ago.  I don’t have any details on the provenance, but I like the colors and the mother and child theme.

Things were still a bit bare on that big wall, so I decided to add a series of mismatched blue and white plates.  Fortunately, my friend Danielle (remember her amazing holiday home tour?) had exactly what I was looking for in her antique booth.  She refused to let me buy them because she is very stubborn even though she is perfect in every other way, so I am going to take her out to lunch a few times instead.

While I usually use 3M Command strips to hang plates on the wall (or even silver platters; see my tutorial here), the lips on the back of these plates meant that I needed to use wire plate hangers or adhesive disks instead (shop them here).

 

 

 

 

Now that my husband took his recliner out to his bachelor pad in Kansas {see it here}, I moved the bergere chair that I bought for $20 next to the sofa.  It’s so comfortable!

 

We spend so much time in this room. I won’t lie, we eat on this sofa (we do have a small dining area that you can see here with MORE blue plates on the wall!). I sprayed it with Scotchguard as I do with every single fabric item in my home that isn’t slipcovered and/or washable, because kids and dogs.

A few weeks ago, my son dumped three slices of pizza, face down of course, on the bergere chair, and I wiped the sauce right off.  Lucky for him!!

My next project is to redo the channel-back velvet chair that I painted as a DIY experiment {see that post here}.  While I love the size and shape of the chair, painting velvet is not a great idea because it gets kind of crispy. You can see the original gold peeping through, too.

I think this chair is going to be blanketed in this navy blue velvet –doesn’t that sound pretty?
