Now that we’ve survived the pollen onslaught and the days are mostly warm, we’ve been working on getting the outside of the house and the yard ready for spring.

I want to share a couple of previous projects we’ve done that I think you’ll enjoy, and then I’m also going to tell you about a new product that I tried yesterday that shined up our mailbox and outdoor lanterns beautifully.

First, a few years ago, I decided to use plain old spray paint on my faded black outdoor cushions (see that “before” picture, above?!).

You can read the details {here}, but seriously, all I did was use my favorite Rust-Oleum 2X spray paint to give them new life.

This was two years ago, and they still look great on my front porch!

When that experiment worked out so well, I decided to try the same idea on a much larger scale–the faded cushions on my outdoor conversation set.

As you all know, replacement cushions are SO expensive, that it’s almost cheaper to buy a brand new set!

In hindsight, the only thing I would do differently is to choose a color other than white.  Even though they were lovely and durable, white is a tough color (think pollen!) to keep clean.

You can read all the how-to’s in {this} post, and here’s how they turned out:

One of Amy’s projects that I dearly love is how she used a can of spray paint to give an old baker’s rack new life as an outdoor entertaining rack.

Baker’s racks are like big, clunky TV armoires–they’re a dime a dozen at thrift shops and yard sales.

Here was Amy’s:

I love the bright green paint she chose.  Isn’t the “after” fun?

Baker's rack spray painted with a bright color and used as a bar during a party!

Now, it’s perfect for serving drinks on the porch.  Details (including paint color), are {here}.

My last tip is one of my favorites; it’s how I use inexpensive IKEA sheer panels to create a DIY screened porch.

Our Savannah house desperately needed a screened porch (the bugs are as big as birds down there!), but we just had a covered patio.

Covered porch--before

In less than an hour and for under $20, I created this romantic space:

You can read the original posts {here} and {here}, and see how the panels held up over time {here}.

OK, now I’m going to mention a product I got to try over the weekend.  It’s by Rust-Oleum–you guys know we work with them a lot–and this isn’t a sponsored post, just FYI. I just really liked how it worked.

It’s called Color Restore and the box looks like this:

restore

It’s designed for plastic, metal, vinyl, fiberglass, stone, composites and more, and you basically just clean your surface and wipe a coat on.

I used it on my mailbox:

And then I used it on our outdoor lights:

lamppost

Pretty neat, huh?  It’s a clear liquid and you wear gloves (included in the kit) to rub it on.  I used about half of one kit to do our mailbox, two outdoor lanterns, and our lamppost, and I intend to do more today.

You can buy it {here} if you’re interested (affiliate link for your convenience); I’ll update you all in a few months as to how it’s held up, but I think it’s a pretty neat product!

I’m also planting flowers and herbs this week, and I’ve bought the ferns for my front porch.

I found a few new pillow covers for our front porch chairs, too.  I’m trying to add navy this year, and the price was right on these for just $13.95. They have other colors, too {here}.

I’d love to hear what you all are doing to freshen up for spring!
