This is one of my best gift ideas for elementary (or even preschool) aged kids.
It isn’t just pre-Christmas hype going on at our house right now, we’ve also just celebrated my daughter’s sixth birthday. This has been a big year, from starting kindergarten and making new friends she is rapidly moving into a new stage of life and learning. It was perfect timing when I was recently offered the opportunity to review the Amazon Kids Fire HD with a FreeTime Unlimited subscription, I couldn’t pass it up.
While our family has all sorts of electronic devices–we’ve got phones, tablets and laptops– my daughter, who may be the most tech-savvy of us all, has made-do spending time on my phone or tablet. We had considered getting her something of her own but we knew despite her young age that as fast as she mastered technology she could be trading stocks, ordering R-rated movies and texting the boys in her kindergarten class before her parents knew what happened!
The Amazon Kids Fire HD is the perfect solution. She had no idea it was coming, but called it the “best birthday present ever” . She has been on it non-stop discovering all the free content that comes with the FreeTime Unlimited, which gives you 5,000 books, movies, TV shows, educational apps, and games—at no additional cost. Since this kids edition also allows you to set screen time limits and choose which titles she can access, I feel confident she can move around at ease on this tablet without stumbling on things she might find having access to the entire internet and I can limit the amount of her use.
Does her face say it all in the picture above? Sorry, I quickly grabbed my phone to try to capture how thrilled she was when she opened the Amazon box. She’s just learning to read, but she loved discovering what books were available {she already found her Disney favorites and it even reads the books out loud to you}, using all the Apps and games {most of her favorites are pre-loaded} and as you can see, she has been especially happy drawing pictures on it, my little artist.
All that aside, I think the best part of this device is that it is truly worry-free. I have a collection of portable devices with cracked screens, my tablet was just recently dropped and cracked when she tried to pass it to someone, and I won’t talk about how many times I have replaced my phone screen thanks to slippery little hands. The Fire HD Kids Edition comes with a two year worry-free guarantee. That means if anything happens, you can send the device back and they’ll replace it for free – no questions asked. So that means I won’t have to replacement or repair costs in the next few months. Basically they give parents up to two full years of peace of mind, brilliant! Amazon, I didn’t think I could love you more…but now I do.
Despite all the kid-friendliness, this isn’t a toy – it’s really a full-fledged tablet. The Kids Edition features a quad-core processor, a vivid HD display, front- and rear-facing cameras and Dolby Digital audio and comes complete with a kid-proof case.
OK, we’re going right back to our Holiday Open House series tomorrow, and we have a full-week of amazing holiday inspiration planned. Tomorrow, Sarah from Life on Virginia Street will be joining us as our guest “hostess”, and you know she works magic in her home!
Thanks so much for stopping by!
