Strangely, quite a few Georgia counties have school on Veterans’ Day this year. Our kids go to private school, well, really a private school/homeschool hybrid, and they have school on Veterans’ Day as well. However, we’ll be keeping them home to go to the Savannah Veterans’ Day parade with us.
We’re not being “judgy” by doing that, but it’s a priority for us as a family to recognize the service of so many of our friends and family, as well as all of those who have served in previous generations, and we think it’s perfectly appropriate to take a day off to pay homage.
So, I’m taking the day off from blogging, too, although I’ll be back later this week to show you where I decided to put the big gold mirror, and also share some of my favorite Thanksgiving tablescape ideas from around the blogosphere.
We are very much looking forward to thanking as many veterans as we can find tomorrow for their service. My husband gets so embarrassed when people do this to him (can you say red-faced?), but in turn he loves speaking with the Vietnam, Korean, and WWII veterans.
Thank you to the spouses who stand next to their soldiers and stay strong during the deployments. It’s been a long war, and I know that it gets tiring. And if you need a little laugh, listen to what one post-Vietnam/pre-9/11 military spouse told me–“You military spouses have it much easier these days, because you don’t have all of the white-glove social obligations to deal with!”
Sigh.
Because a dozen deployments are so much easier than going to a coffee dressed like Jackie O., right? Shouldn’t one of the first social rules (white glove or not) be that we shouldn’t compare ourselves to another in an effort to put him or her down? But I digress… I think you all are amazing, whether you’re wearing pearls and pumps or ripped jeans and a Harley shirt. I have all of the above in my wardrobe, of course!
So have a lovely Veterans’ Day, those of you who have worn the uniform, and I hope you have many opportunities to hear a grateful nation say “thank you” today.
