Golf and BBQ Party on the Deck

The weather is getting warmer here in North Carolina, and the azaleas and dogwoods are just gorgeous.  As many of you know, we’re lucky enough to live in a golf course, and both my husband and my son are devotees of the game.  Since my husband conveniently celebrates his birthday every year during Masters week, we decided to host a final round party (or Par-Tee, get it?) on the deck.

The last few weeks have been pretty busy, so we kind of threw this together (aren’t spontaneous parties the most fun, though?!).  That being said, with golf as a theme, it was so easy to incorporate lots of fun touches throughout the gathering.

Seriously–all I had to do was head to my husband’s closet and pull out all the golf paraphernalia.  A few photos, trophies, and autographed golf balls went on the shelf above the bar:

I cut some azaleas from the backyard and we put them in a clear vase filled with golf balls.

We filled an apothecary jar with more balls that we’ve retrieved from the back yard–seems like a lot of people slice off the tee and they wind up inside our fence.  The dog collects them for us.

For the over-21 crowd, we served an assortment of beers, wines, Arnold Palmers (half lemonade, half iced tea spiked with bourbon), and a gin and tonic bar.  For the kids, we had root beer and cola, and peach sweet tea. And blackjack on the deck!

My daughter and I made the little red golf flags (they’re just card stock glued onto toothpicks), and used those and golf tees to garnish cups of peanuts.

We also popped them in the top of the mini-cupcakes we made to celebrate our birthday boy:

We had fun with the rest of the menu.  It include my husband’s famous teriyaki ribs, pulled pork BBQ, pimiento cheese sandwiches, “Green Jacket Coleslaw”, Orange “Wedges”, Fruit “Par”-faits, Chips + Putts (individual sized bags of chips), and more.

My husband sprinkled the ribs with salt and pepper, and then smoked them for several hours until the meat was literally falling off the bone.  He finished them off by basting them with Soy Vay Veri Veri Teriyaki sauce and letting the sauce caramelize.

We garnished them with roasted sesame seeds and a little chopped green onion, and they were amazing!

Tip:  in our grocery store, the Soy Vay is in the international food aisle with the other Asian food; they have several different flavors to choose from.

After we ate, the serious golfers migrated into the living room to watch the final round in utter silence, but the rest of us visited on the deck.  The tournament was playing out there, too, but at least we were allowed to talk!

It was a perfect afternoon spent with friends, and I think we all had a wonderful time.  Now that the weather’s warm, we’re hoping to have many more chances to #gathernow. (You can take a look at this gallery for inspiration on gather now ideas).
