Visions of Sugarplums—Or My Daughter’s Bedroom, Decked Out for Christmas

Probably the saddest thing about this photo medley is that it might be the last one done in shades of pink and green, as my daughter tells me that next year she wants her room done in robin’s egg blue and green with ELEPHANTS on the walls.  OK…no problem, honey!  Actually, I’m not sure how I’m going to include the elephants without it looking tacky, so I’m hoping she’ll just forget about those.  No need to remind me that I’m stifling her creativity by saying that!  Her room is pretty much entirely pink, green, and white, so it will be a challenge to shift gears with the color palette.  But, since I really do love to decorate, I will arm myself with a can of spray paint and create a more grown-up retreat for my seven-going-on-seventeen-year-old!

So, all of that is a little background on why I really savored the Christmas decorating this year and decided to take pictures.  I know that everyone’s taste is different—consider me and Annabelle to be absolute proof of that statement—but I thought it might give some of you inspiration as you decorate for the holiday.

I seem to have a bit of a “tea theme” going on in Annabelle’s room, hence the two teapots and the tea-related books stacked under the topiary.  I know you probably can’t see that the books are titled Muffins, Scones, and Tea for Two, but that’s because my camera is pretty old and has been dropped on its head a few too many times.  As a side note, I asked Santa for a nice one this Christmas, but I’m not really sure that I’ve been good enough to get it!

Back to the teapots…the larger one is from a dear friend who gave it to Belle on her fourth birthday, and the smaller one was actually hand-painted by my great aunt and is a real family treasure.  I hold my breath over that one every time we move.  The topiary is from TJ Maxx (raise your hand if you LOVE TJMaxx!) and is going on fifteen years old, but we don’t discriminate against the aged in this house, since the house is older than all of us put together.

A quick aside on the tree:  it’s kind of a Charlie Brown tree this year, having lost several of its branches in our last move, but since we’ll probably be moving again next summer, I think I’d better hold onto it and buy a new one once we get there.  Also, since I find tons of Christmas decorations at yard sales, I can keep an eye open for a “new” one.   In the meantime, I stuffed it full of ornaments and other decorations and I hardly notice that it’s a little lopsided, although you might now that I’ve called attention to it.  I continued the tea theme (but did NOT beat it to death, I promise) with her silver tea set and a Christmas-themed set under the tree.  The Christmas set was from my mom and since she died before meeting her granddaughter, it’s extra special to me.  The tree skirt is actually a dresser scarf and it was embroidered by my grandmother, but I think I need a better camera for you to see the detail on it (Santa, are you listening?).

Oh, and do you see the bed in the picture?  That’s my old white iron bed, and I love it.  My daughter, on the other hand, does not.  She has asked me to paint it green or blue next year.  I will normally spray paint anything that sits still, but I have to admit that makes me nervous.  Any ideas?

This is normally Annabelle’s bedside table, but of course I had to rearrange to put the tree in the window so it’s hanging out at the foot of her bed this month.  I actually snagged this little old table for $3 at a yard sale, painted and distressed it, and glued the pompom fringe around the top.  Love it!  (I wonder how it will look in green and robin’s egg blue?)  The Sugar Plum Fairy nutcracker is a reminder of our annual trip to see the Nutcracker—my daughter’s seen it in three different states already.  You can’t really see the quilt, but it was my great-grandmother’s and we think it’s almost one hundred years old.  I sewed the duvet cover out of two fabric shower curtains I found at Marshall’s.  My mother always told me I’d need to know how to sew, and as with everything else she told me, she was right.

“No Pouting.”  These are words to live by during the holiday season, aren’t they?

I made this dollhouse for my daughter last Christmas and I won’t lie, it was nearly the end of me.  It turned out great, although there were moments of despair along the way (and several bottles of wine consumed late at night).  The dollhouse has been decorated for the holidays, but only on the outside.  The residents are extremely messy and when I took a look today, the toilet was in the attic and the bedroom furniture was in the living room.  Some of them were missing articles of clothing, too.  It must have been some party!

I have a few more pictures that I’ll post below without a lot of explanation; if you’re like me, then the more pictures, the better.

Thanks for taking a look around, and enjoy getting your home ready for the season!

For a lot more pictures, you can check out this room on Rate My Space.  I’ve never posted anything there before and am petrified that everyone will give me horrible ratings, so please say nice things (even if you have to fib a little bit–that’s what girlfriends do!).

Also, take a look at Southern Hospitality’s Vignette Party; Annabelle’s room is entry #192.

Holiday Signs (tutorial and printable)

By Amy

DIY Believe Sign

DIY “Joyeux Noel” Sign

As a graphic designer, I love type and the simple messages words can convey. I began making these simple little signs as gifts and decorations and they are so easy.

All you need is:

Scrapbook paper in light color (s) with a simple pattern. I chose a light green with a white paisley so the text won’t compete with the pattern.

A color printer

Several small wood rectangles (I have bought them at both Hobby Lobby and Michael’s)

Corner rounder (mine is from Creative Memories years ago, this is only necessary if your wood has rounded corners)

Spray Mount Craft Adhesive

Ribbon

1) Print out the graphic on your scrapbook paper. (I cut down 12×12 scrapbook paper to fit my printer, BTW). Here is the file I used:

Holiday Sign Printable

2) Cut it down to size (I carefully line up the text in the center of the wood before I cut–which sometimes works, sometimes doesn’t, but perfection isn’t necessary in my world). I use a paper cutter but scissors are fine too. I also round the corners off with a little tool I got years ago from Creative Memories, but if your board has square corners obviously this isn’t necessary.

3) Then spray the back of the paper with spray adhesive and press on the wood board. Don’t worry if it shows through, it will dry. I usually put a heavy book over it for a few minutes just to make sure it adheres.

4) Then I raid my husband’s tools (he finds this very stressful, so I do it when he isn’t around…he really loves his drill) and anyway–get out his drill. I usually use the 3/16 bit to make a hole large enough for the ribbon to go through easily. Just drill a hole on either side from the front of the sign to the back, but don’t get too close to the edge or the wood could crack.

5) Now all I do is add some ribbon, I cut about 2 16″ pieces, knot one end then slide it through the hole, twisting it up makes it easier to get through the small hole. (If you are strugging to get it through the hole, use an opened paperclip to help).

6) Then tie a knot to hold the ribbon in place, then I tie a bow over top of it. (And, I am never able to create those magazine quality bows, so if anyone has any tips please post a comment and help!), but then I trim the ribbon ends neatly and hang. All done! I am going to make a few more signs, so check back for more printables.

DIY Believe Sign

I also made this one for my daughter’s room, its similar to the holiday ones but larger and I plan to do an entire post on it soon.  I was inspired by Jones Design Co.’s post entitled TWIRL and I had to make this sign for my baby girl’s room. She embroidered hers, but I am all for a faster solution.

ENJOY!

Falling in love with Pink and Orange

By Terry

I had to take a minute and share some photo’s from Bill and Kate’s November 20th nuptials.  Kate was such a classic bride but really wanted a non-traditional color scheme. We had a hard time finding the perfect mix of flowers and colors that would still correspond with the time of year. I reached out to my fabulous florist, Holly Hieder Chapple, and she pulled together a fall color palette unlike anything I have seen.  Hot raspberry pink roses, burnt orange accents and a touch of gold created an amazing theme for Kate’s fall event. The mix of bright fresh flowers and dried gold accents has me falling in love with this event.

I wanted to especially thank Pernell & Karen with Blue Square Photography for providing me (and you) with these beautiful photos. Enjoy!

Drab Desk turns into a Fab Find

By Terry

I must confess, I am a bargain hunter. I hate to pay full price for anything, especially costly furniture. Since buying our home three years ago, I have slowly begun collecting pieces of furniture and decorating it inch by inch to turn my house into my dream home. I find inspiration everywhere and thank god for all of the decorating websites and blogs that have helped me along with my decorating journey.

My latest project was the result of my oldest son beginning kindergarten – I wanted to add a desk to his existing bedroom furniture. As a self-proclaimed bargain shopper, I, of course, tackled my usual go-to sites: Craiglist and eBay. Unfortunately, nothing caught my eye. I didn’t want to settle on something that I didn’t love and really wanted to find the perfect desk so I began randomly searching the web and stumbled upon a hidden thrifty secret called “Public Surplus”.

This site has everything from cars to old school chalk boards and luckily for me, a desk. I found, bid on, and won a desk with a wooden chair from our local school system for a whooping $3.28!
I wanted the chair and desk to match so I decided to sand them both down and paint them blue. Adding in the cost of the quart of paint to the total sale still kept me under $15 for the pair. A true bargain, and a great addition to my son’s bedroom.
Here is my drab desk turned fab find for under $15.00.

Week-At-A-Glance Chalkboard Wall Calendar

Week at a glance wall calendar

I am an organization addict.  Combine a Type A personality with only-child syndrome and throw in a touch of OCD, and this is what you get!  I have owned every Day-Timer and Filofax ever made, and for awhile there I was really good about keeping my schedule in my Blackberry, but now I am back to a good old-fashioned wall calendar that gives me the month at a glance and allows me to plan WAY far in advance (a must for every military wife and homeschooling mom).  But for the current week, I have–drumroll, please–my chalkboard calendar on my kitchen wall!

Everyone laughs at my wall calendar, but I know that they are secretly jealous.  They feel flattered if they “make” the calendar and then get to see their names prominently displayed in my kitchen.  Since I have to write down every move that I plan to make or I will forget it, lots of people make my chalkboard in a week’s time!

The panels are simply chalkboard-style Wallies, the peel-and-stick wallpaper that can then be easily removed when the time comes. By the way, I haven’t tested that claim yet, so I am hoping that when we move they do peel off that easily, because I already will have enough nail holes to fill!  Anyway, I bought the Wallies online from Amazon (click HEREto order them through our affiliate program), and I just measured and stuck those puppies on my wall.  I suppose you COULD use tape and chalkboard paint, but that would obviously be a more permanent approach and our frequent moves make me more of a “temporary” than a “permanent” person.

Since there are eight panels but only seven days in the week (I know you know that, but sometimes I schedule enough for eight!), I have one panel left over for NOTES, where I keep a handy running to-do list of things that I have really been putting off for a long time (like make a new will and schedule our flu shots).  My real, daily to-do list gets written on paper and stuffed in my purse, but that’s another post for another day!  I also start my week on Monday, even though my pastor tells me that Sunday is the first day of the week, because I need to see the weekend days together.  Of course, the beauty of the chalk board is that on Sunday, I wipe the whole thing off with a wet paper towel and get to start it all over again.

I should resolve that  I will put more things on my calendar like “massage” or “lunch with the girls, “ or my personal favorite, “shoe shopping,” but unless someone creates that eighth day in my week, I’m not sure if I’m going to have time for those things before January!

Thanksgiving Table

Its Thanksgiving (already!?!). The day before Thanksgiving is always my decorating/table setting day (with some cleaning and last minute grocery shopping thrown in!). I actually cherish the time when I can dig out my silver and even though it’s always in desperate need of a polish, I feel proud I actually use it every once in awhile.

Small Cards Saying "Give Thanks"

I just finished my table and now must run off and start thinking about the actual meal, but here is how it came out this year. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. I hope its filled with food, family and friends!

XO,
