Operation: Organization with Dixie Delights, Organizing your Spices

 

Today we have one of our favorite guests, it just wouldn’t be Operation: Organization without Amanda from Dixie Delights! She is here today sharing her organized spice cabinet. This is one of those great projects that once you take a few minutes and actually do it, you wonder why you didn’t do it sooner.

I have loved participating in Operation Organization at 11 Magnolia Lane since they kicked the series off a few years back. I’ve shared our homework cart and some lovely spaces in my family office, the garage, the mudroom and the kitchen over the years. Today’s project is not quite so pretty, but it makes up for that in sheer usefulness and ease of execution.

Up until last week, this is the disaster of a spice cabinet I have dealt with day in and day out for the last six years. Every time I cooked I had to dig through here, toppling the precariously stacked mound of spices.

 

Armed with the measurements of my cabinet and number of spices I was housing, I hit the street and internet looking for the best way to organize the mess. Here’s what I ended up with…

1. Two stair-step shelf organizers

2. Forty-eight glass spice jars with shake tops

 

I had my mom in town and we collectively raked our brains for a way to make this beautiful, but in the end function won out over form. Given the quantity of spices I have and the way we had to store them to fit them all in, the only labels that would really be functional were very small ones at the tops of the jars.

 

End the end, I am extremely pleased with my new spice cabinet. It’s super functional and something that I can easily maintain. And I am now storing my extracts in the door shelves that came with the house, rather than on the third shelf up that I couldn’t reach without climbing on the counter.

 

As we all know, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And this, my friends, makes my heart sing! It is so worthwhile to go ahead and just dive in to organizing that bothersome little space in your home that gets you every time. I did all of this in a day… from shopping to execution and am now asking myself “what took so long?!”
