Jewelry bowl with round gold monogram--great gift idea | 11 Magnolia LaneHey, everyone–do you remember Amy’s darling monogrammed gold-rimmed bowls that she made for me and Terry?  She posted about them {here}.

She found the bowls at Home Goods, but I haven’t been able to find any like them in the months since.  So, when I was in Target a few weeks ago, I found these cute little dip bowls in their kitchen aisle (where all of the white, open stock dishes are).  You can also batch order them online; I’ve linked to all of them below.

They tend to go in and out of stock, so I’m also linking to other options below!

(if the footed 6 oz bowl is sold out, then these are a great substitute. I’ve also seen them at Harris-Teeter and Kroger for less, if you have those grocery stores near you)

They’re only $1.99 each (plus 5% off if you have that Red Card!), and they have a couple of other styles in case you want something that’s a bit more modern or even square:

Additional bowl options online that I’ve used are here:

Obviously, these little dishes didn’t have the gold rim that Amy’s bowls have, so I headed to the craft store and bought a gold metallic, oil-based paint pen:

It was so easy just to add the gold rim to the bowls, and I love the small size of these little dip bowls–perfect for rings next to the sink or to hold paper clips on my desk.

I added the round gold monogram using my Silhouette CAMEO.  It measures 1.25″ in diameter, and if you have a vinyl cutter, you can use my tutorial on how to create your own round monograms {here}. The best gold vinyl I’ve ever used is {here}; select “gold metallic” as the color. If you don’t have a vinyl cutter, than you can buy them in our Etsy shop  {here} :).

You can tell that I’m going into major production right now–we’re getting in to the holiday season and this is going to be one of my teacher gifts for Christmas (but shhh!  Don’t tell!).

A special shout out to our friend Amy at AR Interiors; she took our idea and used the gold paint marker on an oval dish from World Market which gave me the idea to do the same thing on these little Target bowls.  I’m going to see if a gold rim on the bottom of the footed bowl looks good, next.

Ek! They are just far to cute! The gold rim really finished them off nicely. You are going to have some very happy teachers this year.

Thanks, Heather. I certainly hope they’ll be happy–my kids have wonderful teachers who are such a tremendous blessing in their lives. I wish I could do more to show them how much they’re appreciated!

I have had such a great time enjoying your blog since I found you this last year and the shop is a wonderful addition! Just a quick question – can you make the polka dots in black as well as in gold? I would love to add some to a few rooms, but I need black for one room. Thanks!

Ginger–that’s so kind of you! We’re so happy that you’re enjoying the blog. 🙂

You can absolutely order the polka dots in black instead of gold. Just leave me a note when you check out if you decide to purchase and I’ll be happy to make them in black. Thanks!

Hi, I was wondering what is the exact vinyl you used for this project? (the monogrammed bowls). I am going to order the link for the oil based gold pen so I wanted the vinyl to match this pen! I’ve looked online at a bunch of vinyl but I wasn’t sure which one to order. Thank you so much 🙂

Kristin– I ordered Oracal indoor vinyl in gold for this project; I order mine from ExpressionsVinyl.com The Silhouette vinyl in gold is a little shinier if you want more “bling.” Either works fine with the pen!

Just to add to the location of these little bowls. Kroger has them also. I purchased two different types today and they
are on sale for 1.59 1/4/15. Our Target was sold out. I think we have a lot of crafters in our area.

Do you have any tips for getting the gold paint onto the rim evenly? I am trying to make these and have tried a few techniques but my first bowl is not giftable. The paint is a bit ragged around the edges of the line and the width of the gold line varies. any advice is appreciated.

I haven’t had a problem with the rims, but I have a few suggestions you can try. First, you should be able to use a cotton ball dipped in nail polish remover or rubbing alcohol to remove the gold paint so you can try again.

How thick is the tip of the paint pen that you’re using? The one that I linked to has a nice thick tip, which is easiest to work with. I guess I have a steady hand, because I don’t need to rest my hand on the rim of the bowl, but you could certainly rim half of it, let the paint dry, and then rim the other half so that you can rest your hand on the rim. As a last resort, ask someone with a steadier hand than you to do it!

      I hope that helps – – Christy

    Hi Christy,

Did you use anything to seal the gold rim?

No, I didn’t, and no issues with chipping or flaking!

Can I add red rim to my white bowls? I’m using these bowls to serve soup/appetizer so will that be ok? Since I’m using a pen too.
