Saving Our Wood Adirondack Chairs with HomeRight

We are proud to partner with the HomeRight company as brand ambassadors and they sponsored this post, all opinions are my own.

With our move to our new home rapidly approaching, I haven’t had time to do a lot of DIY projects recently. This project was fast and easy, so I thought I’d share it with you all how I saved these white Adirondack chairs from the trash pile. We’ve had these nice (well, they were nice at one point) wood chairs that we’ve used around our fire pit {below, see how we built the Fire Pit HERE} in our last home.

When I found these chairs this spring, having been left by our very tired and cold movers leaning up against the back of our rental home where they had been exposed to the elements all winter long, the paint was peeling and chipping off. They were also pretty dirty, so I wasn’t sure if it would be worth trying to save them. Since they were a gift from my parents and nice quality, wood chairs, I decided I wanted to figure out how to make them beautiful again.

Since I have a HomeRight Finish Max Paint Sprayer it’s easy to give furniture a new coat of paint, and often that is all a quality piece needs for a second lease on life.  I had high hopes for these chairs and set about giving them a good cleaning with some soap and water to see what I had to work with.

Unfortunately, I found the paint was peeling off the chairs in places so before I could paint, I had to give them a very good sanding. Again, this was a simple step in the process, I used my hand sander and went over the chairs to remove all the peeling paint. I didn’t worry about getting every last bit of paint off, they are outside chairs so I wasn’t striving for perfection; I just didn’t want to risk the new paint chipping off so I sanded until the wood was smooth.

After the sanding was done, I set up a make-shift spray barrier to contain any overspray. Normally I would use my HomeRight Spray Shelter, but that’s in a box that has not seen the light of day since being packed up last fall {see our move/new house details HERE} so for this project I improvised with a plastic drop cloth draped over some bushes on our patio. (yes, my neighbors love me!)

I used an off the shelf paint + primer (from Lowes) in white since I already had it on hand. I think it might have been better to do a primer coat first, then paint several coats after that with a durable formula paint but I didn’t think of that until I was too far into the process. You can also use any color you like, these chairs look fun in all sorts of bright or pastel tones too.

Using a paint sprayer like the HomeRight Super Finish Max made this project go lightning fast–like less than 10 minutes of spraying and they were done. I let them dry for a few hours, then gave them a quick second coat and they were finished. Since they are just outside chairs I didn’t worry about perfection, but they looked so much better with new paint on them.

Here’s a video of how I used the FinishMax to paint kitchen cabinets:

I am so pleased with this project and so glad I decided to make the effort to save them.  Not only did I not throw away chairs that were fairly expensive to begin with, but now I have a nice set of chairs we can use again at our new house. We’ll definitely put them to good use since we have pretty lake views off the back of our lot, I can already see using them to create a sitting area in the backyard. However,  I’ll be sure to cover them with something protective (like this) over next winter to protect the paint.

We’ve used our HomeRight Paint Sprayers for so many projects over the years, we seem to keep coming up with more uses for them. I love seeing a tired, dirty and worn piece of furniture come back to life with nothing but paint. You can see all our HomeRight painting projects HERE.

For fun, we get to giveaway a HomeRight SuperFinish Max sprayer to one lucky reader! All you need to do to enter to win is use the Rafflecopter widget below. Good luck everyone!

I actually have two RED chairs just like your white ones that are in worse condition than yours! As well as some older wicker that needs a new life for our new screened porch addition! I’d LOVE to have the sprayer.

I need this! I have two well loved white wooden rocking chairs on my porch that I want to paint black. I have been putting it off because hand painting all the crevices seems so daunting. This would make the job so quick!!!!

I would use this to paint our balcony (it’s in the intense sun and we have to paint once a year to protect it). This would make my job soooo much easier!
