A few weeks ago, I scored a new-to-me set of porch furniture from my favorite thrift shop; at $75 for all three pieces, I thought it was a great deal. As many of you know from {this} post, we’re planning on relocating locally in a few months when my husband returns from overseas, and our new house (which I haven’t shared yet but will soon) has more outdoor living spaces to enjoy–and furnish!
While the wicker pieces were a little worse for the wear, I knew that I could get them looking beautiful with just a little TLC and my HomeRight Super FinishMax paint sprayer. As you know, when we share a HomeRight post, there’s always a giveaway included, so be sure to scroll to the end of this post to enter to win your very own Super FinishMax!
First I cleaned off the dust, cobwebs, and pollen by spraying the set down with the hose and letting it dry thoroughly in the sun.
Painting was easy; I pulled the set out of the garage and assembled my HomeRight spray shelter (buy here | more info here) to protect the furniture from breezes and the surrounding area from overspray.
I used the green nozzle on my HomeRight Super FinishMax HVLP (high volume low pressure) paint sprayer, which is my favorite for painting furniture, and black semi-gloss latex paint straight off the shelf (I thinned it just a little bit with water).
I would NEVER recommend painting wicker with a brush; trust me when I tell you that spray painting is the ONLY way to go!
After two quick coats, the chairs were looking brand-new!
I ordered new black and white cabana stripe cushions because it was time–my old outdoor cushions were about eight years old, if you can believe it. I found an amazing deal on them and I’ve listed all of my sources at the end of the post in case you’re in the market for new ones, too. I also bought a striped umbrella to use at the new house because we’ll probably have an outdoor dining table and chairs there.
By the way, if you’re a detail person then you probably noticed that the loveseat is not the same one as in the first picture. We had SO much rain over the weekend that I opted just to finish the chairs so I could get this post written and finish the loveseat later. The cane loveseat on the front porch is another thrift store find from a few months ago (and it was only $10!), and I also painted it with the Super FinishMax, so it’s all good.
I really prefer the look of black wicker to white, but of course taste is personal. You could easily transform a similar set using white paint instead.
I’m sure it doesn’t surprise anyone to know that we’ve really enjoyed the porch on the MCC House while we’ve lived here. Front porch living is especially interesting when you live downtown and there’s lots of people watching!
The chairs are super-comfortable and have new life now that they’ve been painted and given new cushions. I fully expect to get many years of porch-sitting out of them.
As promised, here are my sources for the pillows and some of our other outdoor pieces.
And here’s this month’s giveaway. Good luck!
