Spring cleaning has officially kicked off here at 11 Magnolia Lane (even though it is currently snowing outside) and I’ve been doing a lot of redecorating: painting furniture, spraying frames, organizing toys and getting rid of clutter. One project I have been focused on is lightening up my main level. I have dark floors (ebony beech, to be exact), dark cherry kitchen cabinets and a lot of dark furniture. Trying to keep things light is difficult to do when everything you own is either black or dark brown!

Because of my open floor plan, I cannot afford to refurnish my main level; once I start redecorating one room, I’d have to carry it over into the next. That would not only be super-expensive, but also very time consuming.

Although I know white cabinets would totally lighten up my main level, I am not yet brave enough to repaint my kitchen cabinets like Christy did last year (check out her amazing kitchen transformation here). That project is something that I plan to tackle soon. In the meantime, I have been working on smaller projects to lighten up my home just in time for spring.

We have a lot of beautiful windows across the rear wall of my main level; there are two sets of double windows in my family room, a large sliding glass door in my kitchen and a large window right over my sink. Unfortunately, they are not on the sunny side of the house, so natural lighting is an issue. On a positive note, we do get to witness some fabulous sunsets.

One big change I’ve made during “Operation Lighten Up” is that I replaced my heavy, cream-colored Pottery Barn drapes with some sheer white Ikea panels. In retrospect, maybe I should have waited until winter was over before changing out my lined drapes with the “barely there” sheers; my house has been freezing and our heating bills have been sky high!  My husband wanted me to change them back after paying January’s heating bill, but didn’t want to give up the new light and bright look I created, so I knew I had to add something to control the draft and appease my husband without darkening the room.

About 2 months ago, I began working with an amazing company called FUA Window Coverings. FUA Window Covering manufactures woven wood shades and have been doing so since 1956. More than 57 years later, FUA’s handcrafted woven shades are assembled piece-by-piece with pride, making them the most naturally superior window shades in the industry. Not only are their shades beautifully made but FUA’s customer service is impeccable. I always say that customer service is a dying art. Many times you, the customer, are made to feel like you did something wrong if you are unhappy about a product or indecisive about what to buy. I am typically an indecisive customer and that was definitely the case while selecting shades for my main level makeover.

My point-of-contact at FUA was José, the most patient person I have ever worked with (when I say patient, I mean really, really patient).  FUA offers over 50 beautiful colors and patterns to choose from (click here to see all their color and design options) and I would change my mind daily during the selection process, trying to decide on which coverings I wanted. José handled my inability to make a decision like a pro and sent me as many samples as I needed. He helped me narrow down my choices and walked me through each additional step that followed. José was a saint, and I love my new FUA window shades!

Since I wanted to keep my main level light and bright I selected the Cobo style. I love the neutral color because it perfectly compliments the black and white color scheme I already have in place. More importantly, I love the pattern.

The Cobo has a light striped pattern woven into the shade, which brings interest to my windows without darkening up the room. FUA offers something for everyone with a variety of styles, colors and patterns to choose from. Since two of my windows in my family room are double windows I was concerned that I would have to have one large shade but because FUA offers 14 styles of shades (click here to check them out), I was able to select the style, the pull mechanism and whether or not to have a valance.

I personally love the look of the Roman Shade but really wanted two individual shades per each double window. I also had concerns over the pull mechanism since I have three small children at home.  José at FUA addressed all my concerns and helped me design a window covering to fit my needs.  In the end, I selected the multiple Roman Shade, the perfect option for a double window as it divides the width into two individual shades and is mounted on one head rail with a valance.  I also added their Roller Shade mechanism so we wouldn’t have any long cords hanging down for any of the windows.  The shades look absolutely stunning in my family room and since I choose not to line them, I still get plenty of light even when they are down.  Our heating bills have gone down as well, which has made my hubby super happy.

Lastly, I need to share that hanging these window shades was so easy.  Trust me when I share that I am not very handy.  I rely on my husband for power tool help so when I say that anyone can hang these window coverings, I really mean it. My husband and I hung them together; it is easier with two people–especially if you have double panel windows like I do. FUA’s hanging bracket makes measuring and hanging these window shades error-proof. FUA shipped the shades directly to my home and within an hour of receiving them, unpacking and reviewing them (FUA instructs you to review your shades upon arrival), they were installed.
