I am calling this part 1 because I still have some small details to add to my kids’ bathroom, but I am so happy with my progress this far that I am SO ready to show it off.

I didn’t expect to move the kids’ bathroom to the top of my new house “To-Do” list, but an idea suddenly struck and I went with it. My inspiration was this beautiful nursery picture in the Pottery Barn Kids catalog.

Inspiration Room

Here is the very plain jane “before” picture right after we moved in.

I knew immediately that I wanted to use a gray and white color scheme in the kids’ bathroom. I originally thought I would do polka dots on the walls like in the picture, but as I have 2 boys and a girl I needed a more gender-neutral theme.  So, a gray (BM Cape May Cobblestone) horizontal stripe it was. (read how to paint perfect horizontal stripes here)

Best way to capture the picture in a tiny bathroom–the view in the mirror.

After chatting with Christy who assured me I could handle the board & batten treatment (see hers HERE) and reading many of the great online tutorials for it, I jumped in and… well, that was about 3 weeks ago.

OK, so it’s really not an overnight project. Like many tutorials warn, putting the battens up is fairly easy, but painting and caulking (and re-painting and re-caulking) takes a little bit of time.

To accessorize the room, I already had this towel bar and hanging galvanized buckets from IKEA that I had used in my former office. I am crossing my fingers I can obtain a third bucket next time I am at IKEA so each of my 3 children will have their own bucket and then morning routines will go more smoothly. (In my fantasy world, right?)

This super cute basket (below) was a hostess present from Terry recently, and I hope she won’t mind that I sprayed it with metal spray paint to match my decor? 🙂 My mom found these very cool little chalkboards  for me for Christmas and I am using them everywhere I can these days.

I also painted (and this was the point where I realized I was getting a little crazy) my formerly white shower curtain hooks so there would be another pop of yellow in the room. It really was super-easy, just a quick spray of Zinsser spray primer, then 2 quick coats of craft paint and now I have yellow shower hooks, perfect.

I made some decorative accessories like this printable sign. {Like it? Click here {Christopher Robin Printable} and download your own copy} and this great “Wash Your Hands” sign, which was a Pinterest find from 4 Men 1 Lady.  I just printed it and mounted it on a plain wood plaque which I had painted gray to match first.

So, what is left to do? Well, I am on the hunt for a yellow and white rug– preferably polka-dotted, and polka-dotted towels (which I can’t find ANYWHERE in yellow, Pottery Barn Kids will you please add yellow in again soon? or Garnet Hill? Please?) and I also plan to update the bottom of the shower curtain with some yellow ribbon (or something) to ground the room with a yellow pop too.

Oh, and yes I still need to add molding to the builder-grade mirror, how could I forget that detail? (read how to do that here)

{Small bathrooms are hard to photograph, but hopefully you can get the idea}

  6. I love this color combination, I’m trying to find a place to use it in my house. My daughter is pretty solidly set in the world and pink and purple and my son is all about green and orange (although his room is green and blue). Maybe I could use this for the baby, she’s too little to talk and express a preference:)

  31. This is beautiful! I love the idea of buckets for kids’ things. I’ve been trying to figure out what to do for my kids’ stuff, and this might be my solution. Thank you 🙂

  32. What a great job! Will you come do my kiddo’s bathroom now????

  33. Beautiful makeover, Amy!!!
Thank you for linking to my party.
I’ll be featuring your makeover in my next post.

  34. So cute! What color is the white you used with the grey stripes? Also what finish did you use?

    • Thanks Shelby! The color is BM Cape May Cobblestone in a satin. The board and batten is a semi-gloss just a standard white.

  35. Your bathroom looks IDENTICAL to mine. Thanks for giving me hope that this small builder grade bathroom could really look great!

  36. Im doing this to my kids bathroom now! How wide are your gray stripes? Do you have updated picture with your mirror?

  37. Love those cute little buckets! Great job!!

  38. Amy, I love the look of your board and batten. Do you remember what types of wood you used? The vertical ones look like latice, but I wanted to be sure. Gorgeous bathroom!

    • I found the wood at home depot, it was pre cut to the length I needed which made it so easy. Its about 1/4″ thick and was up front in the lumbar department. I don’t know if its “lattice” but that might be the description? I am sorry not to be more help.
      Thanks for stopping by!

  39. Hi love the look!! We paint a lot of lines in our home! We just love them. Curious what your line widths were for each color!!! Nice work!
    Many blessings,

    • Thanks Laura, they are about 8 inches? The size worked well in the space, at least I think so!

      Have a great day,

      • How tall are you ceilings and how far up from the ground did you do you board and batten?

        • Hi Shelby. That is a great question–we’ve moved from that house so I can’t go just measure. I can tell you I didn’t cut the lattice boards–so the length that they came from Home Depot is how high they ran. They touched the molding on the bottom, then I attached them to the wall, then placed the top molding above. I taped them all up first, then divided the area above the molding to calculate how to tape off to make the stripes equal. I hope that makes sense!

  40. Love this bathroom! We just bought our first home and I’ve been looking for inspiration! Where did you get such a long shower curtain? I’m loving the ceiling to floor look!

  41. Where did you get your shower curtain?

  42. It looks great! Did you do anything to the vanity and cabinets?

    • Hi Allison, sorry for the delay in responding to your question. No the vanity and cabinets in the bathroom were just builder grade. They match my kitchen, so the cabinets are fine. The top is a little boring but with kids cultured marble is pretty practical so we didn’t change it out.
      Thanks for visiting!

  43. You may know this already, but Bed, Bath and Beyond has a yellow with white polka dots bath mat and shower curtain.
