Just as Amy shared her Virginia Craftsman home tour last week, today I’m pulling together a quick home tour here in North Carolina at Magnolia Cottage. We’ve been in this (rental) home since last July, so eight months, and quite a lot has happened during that time!
I haven’t shared every room, although I’ve certainly done work in every room (I’ve painted everywhere except the kitchen, if that gives you an idea), and I’m hoping to share at least one of the upstairs bedrooms in my upcoming spring home tour.
While we’re only here for a short while thanks to the needs of the Army, it’s been a wonderful home for us. I love that we are smack dab in the middle of the downtown of our sweet small town and can walk to almost everything and anything.
I won’t take a lot of time to share the “before” photos in this post, but you’re welcome to take a look {here} to see how it all looked last year.
Let’s begin the tour on the front porch:
I painted the floor last July and of course it was about a million degrees outside when I did, but it really, really needed it {read more about that project and see all the photos here}. I also added the vinyl house numbers on the top step.
The front door opens right into our living room. It’s had a few furniture arrangements even in eight short months, but we love the space.
You can see more of this space here, or for more details on how I pleated our IKEA curtains to make them look more high-end, check out this post.
Our breakfast room/den has gotten a larger rug since this photo was taken, but it’s exactly the same rug, just 2′ wider in diameter. Our last dining room was too small to fit the correct size, but now we have more space to spread out.
I haven’t shared much of our kitchen yet only because I haven’t gotten around to it, but you can get a peek at it in the below photo.
{See more of the breakfast room/den here}
The door to the right opens to our downstairs bathroom/powder room and I’ve done a lot of work in there.
Here are a few of the “after” photos, but it’s definitely worth a visit to see the “before” photos here.
A few weeks ago, I shared what I’ve done in our laundry room. Since our last laundry room was in what we affectionally called the “serial killer basement,” I’m excited just to have a laundry room in this house!
I haven’t shared a ton of the dining room yet, but I did show off this bar cart that I put together for my husband:
Probably the project that has taken the most blood, sweat, and tears was redoing the stairs. I painted them and then installed a seagrass runner, taking them from this:

I know it’s time to start showing off the upstairs bedrooms, although they’re still a work in progress. Here’s the landing:

I did share my daughter’s room as part of our Christmas holiday home tour; if you don’t mind lights and garland you can see more of it here:
I’ll certainly share more of it soon, if it’s ever this clean again.
Looking back, that’s quite a lot that we’ve managed to get done in just eight months; be sure to stay tuned for (hopefully) continued progress. Thanks for stopping by!
