We’re proud to be HomeRight brand ambassadors, and this post is sponsored by them.  All opinions are 100% our own.

The very best time to clean and declutter your home is during the first few months of the year.  I was motivated to tackle our grungy downstairs bathroom and closet recently.  We have hard water, so it seems like our glass shower doors are always cloudy and streaked.  Plus, it’s cold and flu season, and the bathroom is ground zero for the battle against germs!

Our posts contain affiliate links.  If you make a purchase after clicking on these links, we will earn a small commission, which helps to keep our content free.  You don’t pay a cent more than you would otherwise, since that would be tacky! Read our full disclosure policy here.

I’ve had a HomeRight SteamMachine for years now, and I use it to clean and sanitize literally everything in my house.  But as I got to work on deep cleaning the bathroom, I realized that probably the messiest area in the entire house was the closet right next to it where I keep my cleaning supplies–go figure!

**BE SURE TO READ TO THE END OF THE POST; WE’RE GIVING AWAY A STEAMMACHINE AND ACCESSORY BAG TO ONE READER**

First, I got the SteamMachine ready to go by adding water to the reservoir and turning it on.  That’s it!  It takes about eight minutes to build up steam pressure, and you’ll know it’s ready to use when the orange light turns off.

While it was warming up, I pulled everything out of my cleaning closet and did a quick sort, fold, and organize.  I had just been stuffing clean linens in here without really organizing them–no wonder it was hard to find things.

Linen closet

Meanwhile, I started tidying the bathroom.  This is the one my son and daughter use, so it’s always a challenging space to clean.  Our hard water makes the class doors so cloudy–can you see the soap scum in this photo?! I’m standing in the shower, taking the photo through the glass door–yuck!

Usually, the SteamMachine can handle soap scum by itself, but for super hard water like ours, here’s a tip.  One of my favorite DIY cleaners for soap scum is 1 c. rubbing alcohol (try 70%), 2 T. castile soap, and 1 c. water.  Mix it all up in a glass spray bottle and squirt on your soap-scummy surfaces and let it work for 5-10 minutes.

You’ll want to use the SteamMachine’s squeegee attachment for glass shower doors.  Against pressurized, high-temperature steam, germs and grime really don’t stand a chance.

While I had the SteamMachine cranking, I used it to clean the shelves and baseboards in my cleaning closet and steam around the faucets and drain in the bathroom.  If you have boys, the SteamMachine is perfect for around the toilet, if you know what I mean!

HomeRight SteamMachine

There’s literally an attachment for every job. One of my favorites is the small brush, to get the gunk that always accumulates in the shower and around faucets.

The smaller attachments are stored in the body of the SteamMachine, so they’re always at your fingertips.

HomeRight SteamMachine

Look how gorgeous my shower door was when I finished:

HomeRight SteamMachine

The new accessory bag is the perfect place to stash all of the larger pieces and attachments that come with the SteamMachine, and the over-the-door hooks allow you to maximize the often-wasted space on the back of the door.

I wound up with so much extra room that my SteamMachine was a little lonesome on the floor of my cleaning closet!

January and February are great months for tackling some deep cleaning and sorting in our home; you’re right! Creating and maintaining lovely useful spaces always includes the nitty gritty, and often a pair of protective gloves!!!????

And, to your question- definitely the shower and its hard water stained grout lines.

The minute I saw the machine I wondered if it would work for wallpaper… I have a master bedroom that screams 1970, and I just don’t get around to that because of how hard it’s going to be… This would be miraculous. I use hot water, which is good, but steam?!

Christy, another good way to clean the shower door is to dampen a dryer sheet and use it on the glass. Once the scum is off, follow up with your glass cleaner.
