When we were offered the opportunity to read and review Mary Kay Andrews’ newest book, Ladies’ Night, we pretty much jumped at the opportunity. After all, we’re all about our Ladies’ Night Out {Read more HERE and HERE and HERE}.

Ladies Night Marked

Reading the book was great fun, and this opportunity gave us the excuse to plan our own “Ladies’ Night” for our friends and readers. Terry and I planned a fun, light menu of finger foods and a yummy dessert for our guests. {Mary Kay Andrews also includes recipes in her books; you can see her recipes HERE}. We tracked down old “vintage” looking books at a used bookstore to embellish and whipped up a yummy batch of sangria just in case anyone got thirsty while crafting 🙂 .

First of all, this new, fun book centers around Grace, a very successful DIY Home Blogger. This book had me hooked when it opened with Grace photographing her “white ironstone platters…placed on an antique grain-sack table runner”…how can you not love her? In typical Mary Kay Andrews’ fun style, the book follows Grace as her marriage falls apart, her blog is taken over by her former assistant and husband, and she is forced to go to a divorce therapy group which quickly becomes her “Ladies’ Night“. Aside from this book being a great beach read, it’s also a very interesting look at the business side of blogging and I commend Mary Kay Andrews for recognizing the professional side of this burgeoning industry.

Grace is fun, crafty and spirited and Mary Kay definitely did her research on the DIY blog niche, from the paint colors she talks about Grace using to the more technical side of running a blog; it was an enlightening read. The book is highly entertaining, the characters are funny and engaging, and their antics make for a bit of a page-turning read.

Our Ladies’ Night was a bit calmer then some of the events that take place in the book! We have wanted to do an event with Janet of The Empty Nest for a while. We love her store, and since we share friends and readers, we thought spinning some sort of chalk paint and a craft into the social side of Ladies’ Night would be the perfect fit. Janet {in green below, who just oozes creativity} came right up with the idea of decorating old books as the perfect tie in the to our book-related Ladies’ Night.

We spread the word, gathered the girls and last night got together for a fun evening of crafting, painting, mod-podging, eating, drinking and socializing.

girls working

The process for the books was easy. Janet provided an abundance of chalk paint and other decorative embellishments. We used hard backed books and the first step was to paint them with chalk paint. {You really can paint anything with chalk paint!}. Each crafty girl then went on to create their own masterpiece.

Janet provided the guidance and some wonderful embellishments like this lovely French postcard from the 1930’s, now preserved forever on this book.

This Ladies Night was something different from the types we’ve done in the past which usually involved shopping {also something women do well together!}, it was a great way to be creative and it was so fun to see how different and beautiful each book became.

Janet has promised she will do this again {we can’t wait} so we’ll be looking forward to more creative “Ladies’ Nights” to come!

Thanks ladies to all of you who came out last night! We loved seeing how creative you were :). It was a pleasure to meet Traci {her blog here} and spend more time with Annabel and don’t forget to pay Janet’s store a virtual visit Here}

So, tell us, what do you love about getting together with your girlfriends? What fun Ladies’ Nights have you done?

We have a group of ladies from church who love to get together for any excuse: baby showers, bridal showers, book clubs, birthday celebrations, etc. Some of our most fun parties have been related to a book that we were currently reading and featured food from the country the book was about. Looks like you all had a lot of fun!

  3. My friends and I like to meet at Starbucks. I love that we can relax and have a good time, talk and laugh.

I’ve hosted 3 different Murder Mystery parties in my home for our group of girlfriends. The costumes have been very creative as each try to get into the character they are playing. Would love to win Ladies Night!

  14. I have two different sets of friends that I have Ladies Night’s with on a regular basis. I have my two ya ya sister’s and we go to a really nice restaurant, order a drink, take our time ordering and catch up. Then I have my book club mommies. Our girls are now seniors in high school and we started a book club for them in 4th grade. Then they started having a lot of required reading for school and have lost in interest in reading for fun right now, so now we Mom’s pick a book. But honestly, we aren’t really about the book as much as we are about helping each other through all the angst that comes with being mother’s of 17 yr old girls. What we have is so special and I feel blessed.

  15. We make a point of getting together once a month and we always have a blast! We’ve had game nights, academy awards night, “he broke my heart” night (lots of wine was consumed for that event), wine-tasting and appetizer night and more. Probably the one that was the most fun was a 4th of July party with lots of food, fireworks, and swimming.

  17. Instead of Ladies Night, we have Girls’ Week Out. “We” includes my mother, daughter, daughter-in-law, various granddaughters and sometimes my sister. It started as a way to help my daughter paint her house and has since evolved into a variety of crafty/decorating projects. We can’t always do a full week anymore but it’s at least four days in the summer at the home of whoever needs work done. It also includes shopping, game playing and lots of laughter.

  18. It’s so fun to get with other ladies! Usually we love just catching up since it has been far too long since last visit. Adding wine and perhaps a game of cards ensures lots of laughs!

  19. I recently went to a ladies night that was all about monogramming things. Cups, cell phone holders, whatever! I really liked it.

  21. Kelly Ann says:

My sister does the best ladies’ nights ever!
She picks a singular Christmas craft, collects all the supplies and provides details instructions for her guests.
Last year it was coffee filter wreaths. This year, giant candy canes wrapped in burlap and plaid fabric.
    Guests bring snacks and drinks!
Everyone has a great time and goes home with adorable home decor in time for the holidays.

I love the way you can let loose, laugh, and be crazy the way you only can when you’re just with some close girlfriends. My girls and I have done everything from the rowdy (male dance reviews and pub crawls) to the laid back (wine tastings or movie nights) and it’s always a great time no matter what we do when we get together 🙂

I love to get together with my childhood friends once a month for crafting night. We each make a dish and I supply the tea, iced, in the summer months. We usually have a crafting theme and have a blast. This month’s theme is crafts made from book pages! And sometimes I will leave out old photo albums to remember the good old days with them.
