We’ve been being VERY social around here recently! First with helping throw a 40th birthday party, then co-hosted this 40th birthday party in our home that I am showing you today the very next weekend. Not to mention, I just returned from an amazing wine tour weekend with my high school friends. Needless to say, I am a little tired but completely full of happy memories.

I have two really good friends who turned 40 within a day of each other this month, so a party was definitely in order, in fact we’ve been discussing it all year! Since one of the birthday girls is always telling us stories about growing up in the country– like about how she hadn’t had pizza delivery until college and such–it seemed appropriate that we throw her a party with a country girl theme. I grew up in Arlington, Virginia which is very urban area so I am always fascinated to hear how different her upbringing was.  She and her husband are also to blame for converting our group of couples to country music fans; we spent several really fun summer nights this year seeing Kenny Chesney and Dierks Bentley in concert {next week we see Jason Aldean!} at our local concert venue. So, again we knew “Country Girls” was the perfect party theme.

My co-hostesses Carrie and Kelly and I spent several afternoons at the pool at the end of summer scheming, plotting and planning this party. At first, we were thinking we’d have a true fall theme with hay bales and pumpkins for decor but as the party got closer it was still pretty hot, and as we compiled decorations we found ourselves somehow going more into a “Country Glam” theme. Overall, I think it totally worked! The birthday girls were just told to wear their cowboy boots and we revealed the entire theme the night of to keep them guessing 🙂

I couldn’t have pulled this party off without my two co-hostesses Carrie and Kelly. {Sidenote: my dress came from Glamour Farms and it was perfect for the party, it went especially well with the requisite cowboy boots!} We were so relaxed we actually had time to snap a quick pic pre-party, that never happens!

While I was incredibly thankful we had beautiful weather the night of the party, we had started overhauling our deck well in advance of this party in preparation for the event. I’ll have a full makeover post on that project soon, but we were long overdue to replace a few rotting boards and stain the entire thing. An unexpected thunderstorm a few days before soaked the wood and prevented us from getting the new stain on the boards in time for the party. I admit that the untreated boards majorly make me cringe {especially since the old stain had already been removed} even looking at these photos but in the end I just threw down a rug and reminded myself that our friends wouldn’t care and just moved on.

We kicked the party off with light appetizers–cheeses, salsa {from Chipotle–so good!} and snacks. We were serving a full meal later on but this gave everyone a chance to relax and have a drink first.

To drink we offered my husband’s always popular Bourbon Peach Lemonade {in the large jar} and pre-mixed a batch of my favorite raspberry martinis, we served these in mason jars over ice.  These came out really cute and this was a super easy way to make them self-serve; since it was a little hot guests could just add some ice and drink them directly from the jar 🙂 I should mention this was an adult only event, otherwise we would have marked both of these drinks clearly that they were for over-21! Which they definitely are.

One thing we knew we wanted to do at the party was have a sit down meal together. We had a great menu planned {more on that in a second} so we rounded up tables, chairs and hung lights across the deck. I used 2 inexpensive tablecloths and just picked up some pretty black and white fabric that caught my eye to use as a table runner.

I used simple white napkins, tied in raffia and marked each one with a tag with a guests name.

We rounded up an assortment of lanterns, candles, and fall-ish flowers in mason jars to decorate the center of the table. My neighbor Carrie made a ton of glass jars filled with lemons, herbs and citronella oil to keep the mosquitos at bay and they not only looked nice but they worked great.

My sweet husband tackled hanging the bistro lights the night before and they made a huge difference. Not only do they add a fun touch, but they gave us enough light to eat by which actually might have been a problem since we didn’t sit down to eat until well after dark.

Hands down, the best part of having this party was that I didn’t have to cook! Carrie’s husband Jeff is a professional chef, and he created the most amazing meal for us all. He sourced the delicious steaks from a local farm, and created all the side dishes including green beans, a salad, mashed potatoes and homemade biscuits. I just turned over my kitchen and we had a fabulous and unforgettable meal.

My co-hostess Kelly made delicious cupcakes for dessert but it was so dark by that time, unfortunately I don’t have a good picture. They were completely delicious too 🙂

These are a little hard to read, but I wasted way too much time looking online for fun cocktail napkins for the bar and when I hit on this set {above} I knew I found the perfect ones. They say “Life is all about finding people who are your kind of crazy” and that rings so true! This group of friends has brought so much joy and laughter into our lives, I am so thrilled that we were able to celebrate together and can’t wait for the next time 🙂

  1. I love this theme and you did an amazing job putting it together!

  2. What a fun party! You would be so at home here in Texas! 🙂 Sounds like a dream to have a Chef prepare all the food and to have 2 lovely co-hostesses to help.
